It is now the insurance co truck, they paid me about 2 months ago, about 4 weeks after it was stolen and I am happy with all of that. They paid me what I said it was worth and then paid me for the rack as well, because it was locked to the Jeep..... so all that is good. Your idea of towing to the house is a good one, but when it was recovered, it was not my car so it went to impond. So now it is State Farms car. However I would have thought to maximize what they are going to get out of it they would want to sell me the rack, because to most car vendors it really has no value. Like I said, I have been happy, read surprised, with their handling of the claim by State Farm. I hear horror stories about them, but in the few times I have had an issue, they have been very fair. I had to deal with State Farm when the little wagoneer was totalled... the kid in the saab was insured by them. I don't recall who my carrier was then... but they didn't do a lot to assist, but were standing by if needed. the state farm folks here at first low balled me on the value, way low balled... I mean below book value low ball. I've been down that road before and immediately demanded an appraiser to examine the jeep... they went with his recommendations... which was a grand more than book if I recall. (It had the OME lift, 4.10 gears with lockers, rust free, etc.) I offered to buy it back, they wanted $1,800, about twice what I normally pay for a totalled car... actually often you can get them for a couple hundred bucks! So I said no thanx, but thanx for letting me have the option... it sold for $215 at auction, and I was late getting to the copart auction by two cars! ended up buying that first '99 WJ I had there as a theft recovery. otherwise, state farm treated us pretty well, no real complaints. when I got out of the army in '82 I insured with them, they were pretty reasonable. I am not really in the market yet.... but getting close. I would like to find a nice late 90's early 2000's Cherokee of some kind. My wife really misses our old one and it fit our needs just right. I would like to move to a leather and a sunroof... which I know is also your preference. Besides that it feels strange staying on the XJ list when I have no Jeep! But I just can't leave. I bought an 1988 Oldsmobile Trofeo from a friend..... it only has just under 70k with lots of toys. Drives great and is a lot of fun to drive, but I think I will sell it so that I can buy a Jeep again. It has served me well, but just not fitting my needs. In looking I really like the WJ's and the Classics (don't recall the letter codes). But need to figure out exactly what I want. The theft recovery part makes things different. A couple of things to keep in mind when dealing with insurance companies: - a lot of times, full coverage policies will have somewhere in the fine print that the insurance company has rights to the insured vehicle in the event of a claim. Most don't care, but if you want it back for parts or to try to put back on the road, it's a harder fight. - when the car is totalled, the buy back price usually has little to do with reality. It usually is a calculated value based on what they paid out on the vehicle. I have had success getting this knocked down by getting quotes from junkyards for the car, then passing that along to the adjuster requesting them to call yards for themselves. My last dealing was with Allstate, and it wasn't overly fun. In the end I won, but it was a lot of time I'll never get back.
