The program was designed to provide stimulus to the economy by boosting auto sales, while putting safer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles on the roadways. And if you include the energy cost of crushing and recycling the old cars and building and shipping the new cars, no energy was saved! But this is politics, not engineering. Remember, the leadership in this country is all about the math. It is just that you totally missed the point of the cash for clunkers program. It is about 700,000 new car loans for the new cars sold. And with 700,000 fewer affordable used cars in the market, low income people, who need a decent car to drive, will be forced into buying more expensive used cars and getting predatory (and highly profitable) car loans from the financial services firms who paid for the election campaigns of our elected officials in Washington. Cash for clunkers is not about saving the environment, reducing oil imports or saving the domestic auto industry. Cash for clunkers is about stimulating the economics of the likes of Citigroup, Bank of America and Chase (owner of the majority of predatory payday loan storefronts).
