So, today I decided to see what the electric hydroboost pump thing was all about... started fiddling around tugging on connectors and such... turned on the key I heard a pumping sound... odd, don't remember that sound... pressed the brake pedal and the pedal went down... cool... and the ABS light went out... and back on, and out... mostly out...;) started the jeep up and the brakes felt almost normal, didn't drive it as it was buried in the shop... didn't feel like moving the Tug out of the way, it's raining out... So, figuring I was on a roll, I started checking with the fusible links... found one was open... that fixed the power seats... door locks, and dome lights... Have two possible deals in work for the XJ... one is a trade for another cj-10a tug that someone sent out.. I figure another tug would give me a complete Diesel driveline... Also had a guy interested in buying the XJ, but he's dropped off the face of the earth it seems... oh well. Also found a 2000 WJ that has a bad head gasket on a 4.0L that I may get... ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DEAL is with 4.0L head gaskets on the WJ? (distributorless setup...) Kevin, didn't you have an issue with one on an XJ? trying to work a trade for the WJ with the XJ... we'll see... may end up having to buy it... If I got the 2000 WJ I and the Tug (84 cj-10a) ... well... it's not likely... but it would be a serious popcorn episode... ;) First thing is to try fixing the WJ normally and selling it... only need one... :) but if that 4.0 is toast... monster carport time... ;) the tug has three interested parties, all busy and all out of the area until next week... No word on SuperDawg... hoping he'll be together soon... looking forward to that... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Nov 2009 22:52:15 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: xj: diesel jeep on Craigslist not mine thanx for the lead... if I sell my tug next week I'll buy this... also working with the guy on a possible trade for my '89 XJ ltd... thinking I'll use this drivetrain in something and go a bit more radical with this tug... or, maybe I'll get lucky and someone will buy it before I can work it all out. ;) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Fri, 20 Nov 2009, Andeanfx wrote: # http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/1433732680.html # ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Nov 2009 08:30:16 -0800 From: Jim Blair Subject: xj: RE: fsj: the '89 XJ Ltd, another Tug and a dead WJ You might have hit gold on the ABS, but I wouldn't hold my breath. BIG issue with the post '99 rigs and people are retrofitting earlier heads in and making a mount for the coil on plugs is the hard part. Unless run a long time overheated the bottom end should be fine. This casting was first used with the distributorless setup, then retained through the end of the 4.0. It seems later ones don't have the problem, but the ones placed in XJs (and other things the years the XJ was around still) certainly have the problem. My brother has a 2000 XJ, and it not only cracked the head, but cracked the block as well. I think I sent you a picture of the block damage. The crack in the head was slight, but easily seen when the head was removed. When the head came off originally, I procured a head from alabama cylinder head, which appeared on my porch in CA for $550 shipped. This was at least $250-300 less than rebuilt 0331 castings I had seen (which I'd have no way of knowing were good or not), and considerably less than rebuilding an earlier head then coming up with some way of mounting the coil pack. When the block's crack reared its head, the alabama head was removed, cleaned, and installed on a different short block. The truck seems to run fine now, though the engine had to come apart AGAIN because it flattened a cam, though fortunately that was covered under warranty and I didn't have to deal with it. The head job in the vehicle wasn't all that difficult, with the exception of the head bolt physically closest to the driver's seat was a little hard getting a torque wrench on without a little creativity. After the head went on the first time, there was a bit of piston noise - likely because it got hot enough when it cracked the head to warp something. This obviously wasn't there with the second two times the engine was apart and put back together. Just something to think about.
