(oddly enough, when she drives the XJ she doesn't seem to have any problem placing the wheels where they need to go over obstacles,...?) i picked up 3 steel wheels to replace those that she's bent up, but they're rather rusty looking. i'm not interested in spending any more money on bead blasting, etc., to prepare them for a proper paint job, but would like to be able to paint them well enough so they come close to matching the silver of the one remaining (currently) undamaged wheel on the car,... bottom-line question; are there any recommendations for a paint that i can just spray over the existing surface rust on the replacement wheels to get some silver color on them? keep in mind this is the commuter-beater and they really don't need to look great; i just want to make them look 'less bad'. cheers! e ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 2009 13:09:36 -0500 From: "Bob Brooks" Subject: xj: RE: non-XJ: wheel paint for rusty wheels? I guess it all depends on how much work you want to do. You need to treat the rust. I always have a bottle of Naval jelly available for that. Then you need some kind of etching primer. Eastwood sells a really good one. Then you need your color of choice. Depending on the car, you may want to get a paint that is heat resistant. Again, Eastwood has some good heat resistant paints that I like to use. This is how I restore mild rusty steel wheels (like a set of 4 SSI mags I found at an auto graveyard so many years ago!) I took pictures of the plug, will post 'em tomorrow sometime... I'm not sure if there is internal damage or not yet... next step is to pull the head... can see a ding on #2 piston... the good news is I found several 4.0's with less than 100k on them for $800-$1500.
