I think I'll go and look at that '75 300D... I may look at the F250, once it's out of the shop... maybe... not sure if I want to drive that far when I have jeeps and mercedes to fix... maybe I should just use the '89 xj for the time being... no need to buy yet another vehicle... at least until I sell the '89 xj and the '00 WJ. Gas isn't that expensive... thanx Jim... if I look at the F250 I will look at it with a careful eye... knowing what I'm getting into is a good plan... always find friends on the list helpful. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Tue, 29 Dec 2009, Jim Hoffman wrote: # Here are three e-mails from my buddy... My truck's E40D was # also replaced by the previous owner at 99k. They ARE a weak link. # If that '91 is an automatic it almost certainly has an E40D. Look # THAT one up online... ;) # # He's an entertaining writer. Another engineer geek. ;) # # Jim # # # Emergency brake linkage cable broke. # Fuel Pump went bad # Water pump failed # Power steering hose ruptured # Power steering box blew seal # Ball joints busted # Rusted brake lines # Transfer box locked up due to a broken seal leaking all the fluid. # Cold temp idle advance switch replaced by a toggle switch and an owner standing on a slippery bumper under a raised hood freezing his jingle bells off and cursing every time he wants the truck to start. # Glowplugs needing to be replaced by the ones from Germany since the AC Delco ones burn out the first time you use them. # Headlamp switch burned up harness # Paint fell off # Muffler support bracket rusts out as you watch # # Shall I go on? # # # ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # # # I meant to say "Injector pump went bad". Don't want the guy getting the idea he was going to get away with just $100.00 when $1000.00 is so much better. # # Oh, did I mention that I have lived in fear that the dread E4OD automatic transmission I had could explode at any time? # # About the only things I haven't change are the Injectors. # # Thanks for helping me to relive those wonderful memories. # # ;-) # # # ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # # # Did I mention the cavitation "issue"? The one that Ford was sued for and lost? The one that required them to repair thousands of commercial vehicles since no mention of the coolant additive was ever made? # # Short of using a borescope or a complete teardown there is no way for him to know the status of the block. If he's unlucky enough to have a cylinder wall perforation while cranking he will most likely have a broken connecting rod, piston, and possibly a bent crankshaft. Water is not compressible and there is not much that can stop that series-wound DC starter motor from turning. # # Oh, if he is expecting to be comfortable in the cab while he's driving tell him to forget it: # A/C lost Freon and it's more expensive per ounce than fillet mignon # Climate Control linkage busted so it's stuck on HOT # Fan speed control busted so it's either High or nothing # # Yep, all salt-related problems... # # ;) # # Then there's the time I tried to start it and the ring terminal carrying battery current to the starter MELTED into a puddle of bronze that solidified on my driveway. Oh it was so much fun to remove that harness and then actually get it repaired rather than buy a new one at over $150.00 with my Q/G discount. Of course, the missing half inch of wire where the guy had to attach the new ring terminal using a crimper you hit with a hammer to make the crimp (that is really thick wire) made it almost impossible to reattach the cable. I thanked Ford for that money-saving design the whole time I was under the truck struggling with it. # # Then again, if he does buy the truck he can proudly tell his friends that, since Ford made the battery cables on the driver side thinner than those on the passenger side, he has to "Jump the passenger" if he ever needs a jump start. Of course, he will need a tractor trailer rig to supply the current he needs but, well, a guy can dream. # # C* # # ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 2009 21:41:54 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: a day of wrenching... got the 4.0L out of the '00 WJ today... I think the replacement will go in easier than it came out... mark doesn't think so... :) got a quote to have the engine installed... but I'm going to try it tomorrow. http://wagoneers.com/WJ/tech/WJ-4.0L-swap/ALL.html chased a few parts today after the '86 cj-10a went away... got the glowplug for my '91 300D and installed that after pulling the 4.0L. http://johnmeister.com/DieselBenz/TECH/124-series/124-2.5L-glowplugs/ALL.html tomorrow I need to get the registration for the '89 XJ... down to two running vehicles... near panic setting in... ;) (the '99 WJ and the '91 300D). after much counseling, I decided it's best not to buy anything to replace the tug... considered a used ford Diesel pickup, but was talked out of it... I really need my '83 J10 stepside to be reassembled ASAP... hauling WVO with what I have now is going to be a problem. I was trying to sell that tug for months... figured my J10 was going to be done at the end of November as promised... guess I need to find some kind of plastic tubs to put the WVO containers in the back of the XJ until my J10 is done... my lower back does not like replacing glow plugs... argghh... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 17:21:54 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: 4.0L swap... so close... need help... I'm so very close to having it in place... could use some help getting things lined up and bolted back in place... my son had to leave for the evening... I need someone that has a rough idea of what they are doing to help get things lined up and reinstall the motor mounts... was not easy getting that engine in or out... especially since my engine load balancer thing got loaned to a friend with a 4.0 and never returned... anyway, very, very close to having things lined up but need to rotate the engine just a bit to get the tranny bolts in place and the motor mounts back on... anyone in the Seattle area have an hour or two to spare? :) latest pictures at the bottom: http://wagoneers.com/WJ/tech/WJ-4.0L-swap/ALL.html thanx, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #3131 *************************
