(he lives a few blocks from Frys) however, the throttle return spring on the IP didn't, was idling quite high... the gear shift was VERY loose... had to send out a search party to find 4th gear. tires are 2 years old but looked new... paint was pretty bad, interior ok, seats comfy... stereo worked... windshield needs to be replaced. no rust, no rattles... looks like a factory sunroof, or at least professionaly installed, no wind noise. has an oil leak, suspect it's Diesel... the pump had been worked on before. easily and quietly got up to freeway speeds, cruised nicely... the guy is asking $2600, since it needs quite a bit I'm going to see what the collective thinks and after looking at a couple other mini-Diesel pickups might make an offer... I could drive it as is, but not for that much. ;) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jan 2010 22:49:43 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: popcorn update... having fun with friends and relatives back east and down south... it's 22 in Houston I guess.. 50 degrees up here in Seattle. :) found a '98 VW TDI with some mechanical issues for less than the assortment of mini-Diesel pickups... can get a 50 mpg car w/ a/c for a grand less than a very troubled pickup... going to check it out tomorrow... will continue to hope that PLAN A (aka Superdawg) works out and I'll let my son buy this TDI for his commute to UW in a year or so... the '00 WJ should be done tomorrow as well... still waiting on the title for the '89 XJ, and need a window motor... looks like we'll have mild weather this weekend, should be able to wash cars and clean up around the driveway a bit... and call friends and relatives who are sitting at negative zero temps... :) sure, they can boast about their sunshine all they want... later, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jan 2010 13:40:05 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: '98 TDI or '86 Ranger? talked to the guy with the ranger Diesel... he's willing to come down to $2100... trans rebuild might cost a grand... (if it's totally bad), windshield < $200... - 29 MPG http://johnmeister.com/DIESELS/Ranger_Diesel_1986/ALL.html on the other hand, I found this '98 TDI for $1500 that is bright red and has issues, details: Red 1998 VW TDI. 5 speed manual transmission with 190k. This has been a great car to us over the years but recent mechanical failures mean it is time to say goodbye. Car starts but is not currently drivable. Engine, body, clutch and transmission all in good shape. Known issues: Diesel injection pump is leaking fuel onto the coolant hoses. The fuel is eating through the hoses causing the car to lose coolant. This is the current reason the car is not drivable at the moment. The power locks no longer function and the moonroof needs some adjustments to function correctly again. We have run this car on Biodiesel for many months without issue, would make a great SVO conversion project vehicle. Offering car at much less than the lowest kbb value of a car this age because of the problems, but once repaired this car is sure to have several hundred thousand more miles to give! $1500 obo I'm leaning toward the Ford Ranger again... (even over the Toyota PU that I can't get to until Sunday). the Ford rode nicely, was quite, had plenty of cab room... looks like installing a/c on it will be simple, even found the bolt holes on the engine for the bracketry! THOUGHTS? (besides the question of my sanity or the need for fresh popcorn...) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #3138 *************************
