My son has a '95 XJ and we are having trouble understanding how the rear hatch is supposed to lock. When we got it the latch had been messed with and the key would not turn in the cylinder. The previous owner said you just had to crawl inside and push on the latch to open the hatch. The plastic panel was already broken to expose the latch and he had a stick long enough to reach back there and push on the right spot to open it. I have removed the latch, cleaned it up, replaced the missing springs so that it works correctly. We took the cylinder to a locksmith and got a key that works but something is still not correct. No matter what we do I cannot understand how the mechanism locks to prevent opening the hatch. I believe that I must still be missing something or have something that is still not "bent" the right way. What I would like to ask is if anyone out there has a picture of the latch mechanism, preferably installed, that you could send me so that I can compare to what I have. I have searched all of the various forums and web pages without any success so I thought I would come here and give it another try.
