I got a Motorola for a Christmas present - first time I've ever used a GPS even though my Motorola phone through Verizon has the capability. I can't see close up, so I rely totally on the voice part. The only caveat I have found is that occasionally the map isn't right. I've called them and they said there was no update for my model (which also integrates my cell phone through Bluetooth - hands free - though I also have a headset, I don't have to wear down the battery) They just came out with three new models that now offer "Traffic" for free - some charge extra for it. Plus, they can get updates by plugging into your computer - it checks to see if you're current. The first download is free and I think subsequent ones - when available- are $10. Have no experience with other brands, but this one has a 4.3" screen - they offer one with a bigger screen than that, but it wouldn't help me see it AND I don't need the traffic option, even though I live in Houston. I've never had a bad Motorola product, and they do have GPS in their cell phones, so it's not totally new for them. I can charge mine on a USB port before leaving and can plug it into the lighter if I would go for a long trip. The only two features it doesn't have (at least on my model) is the ability to change the "voice" and when it searches for surrounding businesses (restaurants, gas stations, etc.) it oddly left off Banks... I have a few garmin units and think they are great. I have to say though, the current crop of portable gps units are so good i use it as another tool like my speedo or clock. I use it everytime i go somewhere, even things like to/from work where i could practicaly drive blindfolded. I like having the estimated time of arrival there, i like if i hit a sudden traffic for a short section it is easy to quantify. I know if the traffic jam cost me 11 minutes, not just that it cost me some time. I like having the traffic alerts, and being able to quickly view where the traffic jam is and what caused it. I like being able to find gas stations/banks/restaurants that are closest to my route. I say this because i have a friend who i think feels as though using nav is somehow questioning his masculinity or something. If you ask him if he has one he always says yes, but quickly points out that it is in his trunk and that he barely uses it. Your comment about not needing it reminded me of that a bit... They are just so much more than something to help you find your way when you are lost. That being said, they are far from perfect. The traffic is not 100%, the garmin interface is lacking some features i wish it had, and the directions aren't always the best routes. Also, the "battery" life on the garmin units is a joke. I also find the voice extremely annoying so i always just use it muted. - ------Original Message------ From: john Sender: owner-xj-at-digest.net To: undisclosed-recipients: ; ReplyTo: xj-at-digest.net Subject: xj: good portable talking GPS?
