I can move back and forth along the edge of that driveway, or even go DOWN that hill... risk a couple gardens, drainfield and a rollover... but I'm not stuck... ...oh yes I am.... :) will try to call AAA again tomorrow and figure something out.. and then I need to add decent tires, a battery and alternator to the list for #27. :) snow is receding, it is raining... PTL. http://fotomeister.us/2012/01-Jan-20-snow-day7/ALL.html my son has decided he would like another XJ... I want another WJ (to convert to Diesel)... and I want to replace the 2002 Jetta with another 124 300D... hoping to get my cars up the drive by Sunday to look at a nice '92 300D 2.5L TD... :) I hear that the snow has found it's way back east... :) enjoy, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 TRSTGZS http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2012 10:55:52 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: RE: tires, battery, alternator... # On Sat, 21 Jan 2012, dave wrote: # I guess those spikey tire chains you purchased for your Jetta won't fit the J10? No, and the spider spikes fit to either the benz or the jetta would not get them out either, snow is too deep, both cars would be pushing a foot of snow up a 40 degree slope on gravel or really slick/sloppy pavement... might work now that it's melted back a lot... Those that know my driveway recognize that chains and/or all wheel drive wouldn't get them out of this driveway, you also need ground clearance... The J10 with decent tires will be unstoppable... I am so impressed that it made it up that drive with old Goodyear Reatta street tires... :) But, I'd almost be willing to bet that if I get decent tires on my truck, it won't snow again this year... So I think I'm going to get all season gnarly tires and skip any studded tires. :) Found several sets in the right size on Craigslist... heading out to get the J10 out of the yard... :) Then an alternator, battery, some more improvements, like new door seals and such... the J10 is proving to be very fine Jeep... tomorrow, going to look at a very fine looking (in the pictures) '92 300D. The net result of all this nasty weather has my son looking for an XJ, me looking for a dead WJ for a future Diesel project, me missing my old Diesel Cj-10a, and really appreciating the Jeep J10s and Grand Wagoneers... the Jetta TDI did great in the early stages of the snow last week, impressed, but we prefer the 300D. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 TRSTGZS http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2012 13:00:27 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: free at last... xj rescuses J10... my son's friend with his old XJ gave me just enough of a tug to break over the edge of the drive... kind of slid me through the butterfly bush, re-adjusted my mirror, but didn't leave any permanent marks and I missed the drainfield distribution box, only a few divots to replace... heading out for an alterntor, used tires with tread, antifreeze and some MEAT... I think we've consumed all the leftovers... :) I think we'll be able to get one of the cars out of the drive by this evening... the slush is really slick... BFGs on both my son's GW and his friend's XJ were sliding around a lot... the goodyear regattas on my J10 don't work well on wet road... really struggled to make it to the highway... not coming down the drive until I have better tires or the drive is clear. :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 TRSTGZS http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2012 13:36:38 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: Jeep assists Jeep... I rerouted the wiring through two 100A fuses... the alternator by default would run to the amp gauge... the return leg after the amp gauge feeds the dash, then goes out to the battery... So, I took the lead from the battery post on the Alternator to a 100A fuse and fed it directly to the battery... I took the leg from the dash and ran it to a different 100A fuse and to the battery. This bypasses the AMP gauge completely... well, almost... I'll pull the cluster and jumper the back of the gauge so it does... right now there's a wire running up there that's hot but not doing much otherwise. the truck starts faster than ever before... partially because the coil wiring was also slightly messed up... left the truck sit over night and it started right up, no battery drain... alternator tests good on my tester... taking the new one back to the store. :) Saved $60 with a $1.99 connector...
