My '86 MJ with 2.5L had 375,000 when I sold it (I got it at 120 and took it to Ouray and all over, including Canada and back twice a week to see my kids) We pulled the motor when the owner blew the head gasket at -at-500,000 (speedometer quit working) and put another in. My son did the headgasket and put that motor in his current truck after it tossed a rod a couple years ago. Still runs with 15W40 Delo. My current MJ with 4.0L is 275,000 and awaiting me to finsih the brake booster upgrade and 4x4 conversion so I can drive it. (I'm selling my Chev to my son's friend in a couple weeks and my '03 E250 will be for sale next week. I have an Eagle wagon to drive till the MJ is done and I can decide to sell either. Next up will FINALLY be a Jtruck converted to LPG! The old AMC inline sixes started out in the 60's and were in the earliest Wagoneers... they had the 3.8, or better the 230 Tornado OHC engine, it had some minor issues because oil wasn't good enough back then... then the amc 232, 258 etc.. the 258, or the 4.2L held reign from the early 70's up through 85 or so in the sj world... my 83 J10 still had one... this is a sketchy history, I have this all on my website in ACCURATE detail... anyway, when they made the XJ in 84 they lopped two cylinders off of the 4.2 and made a refined version of it called the 2.5... the improvements in weight and such they made were then put back into the 4.2 to create the 4.0. The 4.0 came out in '87 in the XJ/MJ series.. as a fuel injected engine... the yj's got 4.2s until 90 or 91, right? so the 4.0 goes back into the AMC days... and even the old Rambler days... in 87 Jeep had been working with Renault, that's why the 4.0 had a Renix computer... in '90 they came out with the HO engine, that was when Chrysler converted it to OBD something or another... early ho motors had a few issues... wrist pins, etc... resolved by 93 or so... by '99, midway through the the year they went to distributerless engines (like used in the WJ) for the xj.. problem is the engineers at who ever was in charge, daimler or chrysler, redid the heads and weakened them, so now the 4.0 had "issues"... and would break... good job folks... you improved a legacy... the 4.0 has never been an economy motor... typical AMC design... it's been a durable, long-lived and powerful motor... but not economical, or efficient... or clean... also, with a V6 design they can reduce the size of the front end and space needed for the engine... car designers like v designs... for the most part... even Mercedes has been going away from inline designs... anyway, that's my understanding of why they replaced the 4.0L with a wimpy V6... oh, the 3.7L V6 they put in the kj's was supposedly a 4.7L v8 with two cylinders removed... I've had a few 4.7's... I think if you removed four of those cylinders it would still be quicker than a KJ with a 3.7l v6. :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Sun, 3 Jun 2012, Scott Hyde wrote: # Why was the 4.0 dropped?
