(went through 2 separate freakin' A/C compressors, but that's a different story!) after unloading, i went to move the J**p into its parking spot, and got a Check Engine Light -at- start-up. blinked out up the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and got a 41 ("An open or shorted condition detected in the generator field control circuit"), so it looks like after a mere 245+K miles over the last 18 years, my stock alternator has finally bitten the dust. honestly, considering it did it in our driveway at the *end* of a trip, it couldn't have done it -at- a better time/place! i've always been disappointed with the poor output at idle of the original alternator, and am looking at putting something with a better output in there. does anyone have anything to share about higher-output alternators regarding reliability, performance, fit, etc? i don't want to be doing this again any time soon, but would like something with a better output at idle, and definitely don't want to deal with a fit issue like what i went through recently with the "Direct Fit" Griffin radiator! Mean Green? Powermaster? others? cheers! e ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #3409 *************************
