What's the right second diesel vehicle to own? Text By Mike McGlothlin Diesel Power, March, 2011 1103Dp Jeep Or Jetta Diesel Jeep Liberty Diesel There comes a time in every man's life when he has to set the plans for his toys aside and adhere to his significant other's needs. If you can afford to fund both at the same time, I'm jealous. In my (our) situation, my fiancC)e needs an efficient vehicle for her 50-mile round-trip commute to work. We're looking for something ('05 to '10) with four doors, decent trunk space, and a used-vehicle price tag. Luckily for me, I'm marrying a woman who understands the diesel advantage-so the most important aspect of our search (finding a diesel powertrain) is certain. I'm proud to say that looking at gas-powered cars wasn't even an option. Few Options The challenge? There are no diesels in the United States in our price range. Think about it. The only modern diesel-powered passenger cars are the TDI Volkswagen Jetta, Passat, and the New Beetle (and no, we won't be caught dead in a Beetle). Option 1: Volkswagen A four-door Jetta Sedan was our first idea-because who doesn't want 40 mpg? The powerplants found in the Jettas range from the 100hp 1.9L inline-four, to the 140hp 2.0L inline-four common-rail engine. Volkswagen began using common-rail injection for the '07 model year, which replaced the previous unit-injector system. The one drawback to the Jetta is how well these cars hold their value-used TDIs are not cheap. However, that's also part of diesel's advantage to a potential buyer: You pay a little more now but benefit in the long run in terms of great fuel economy, few repairs, and increased longevity. Option 2: Jeep After our search for the perfect Jetta began, we found ourselves contemplating another four-wheel-drive vehicle. But, as we didn't see the need to have two trucks in the driveway getting 16 to 18 mpg, the Jeep lightbulb illuminated in my head. Remember the diesel-powered Jeep Liberty CRDs offered in '05 and '06 models? They came with the reputable common-rail 2.8L VM Motori four-cylinder, which made 160 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Many people say the 2.8L can achieve as much as 27 mpg on the highway when coupled with the 545RFE transmission. Unfortunately, the diesel-powered Liberty was canceled after the '06 model year due to the Tier 2 emissions crunch of 2007. The Libertys hold their value, too. But they can be had for slightly less cash than a Jetta. And it would give me peace of mind knowing my future wife will have a front differential at her disposal during the winter months. While we're at completely different ends of the vehicle spectrum with our choices (you pretty much have to be when buying a newer diesel in North America), we have kept the options strictly diesel. Neither of us has an opinion one way or the other yet, but with a little seat time in each vehicle, a decision will be easier to reach. Based on all the letters we receive, I used to think a Jetta was the only viable option to stay connected with readers. However, the recent explosion of positive feedback I received from blogging about the possibility of owning a Jeep has me leaning toward the Liberty. But then again, 40 mpg (or more) on the highway always keeps the word Jetta on the tip of my tongue. It won't be an easy decision, but we'll make it-and you're sure to see our choice in the pages of Diesel Power in the coming months. Feel free to drop me a line and cast your vote. I'll be sure to run it by my fiancC)e.
