I tried replacing the cap and rotor, but that wasn't the problem. I'm concerned that a seal or bushing in the distributors is too worn and it might be time to replace the whole distributor before I get stranded somewhere. The '95 FSM wants me to remove the electric cooling fan and #1 spark plug, rotate the engine til #1 compresses, align to TDC before removing the old distributor. Do I need to go through all that or can I just leave the engine in the position that it's in, note the position of the old distributor and insert the new distributor to be in the same alignment? It looks like the worm gear only has about 12 teeth, so it can't be too hard to get the proper alignment? Or, am I missing something? Don't see why you'd need to disconnect the fan, just watch your fingers. :) I would pull the coil wire, #1 plug, and maybe the cap to watch the rotor come to #1 position. Use a remote starter switch. Watch the timing mark on the balancer. It may be keyed, but by having it lined up as described you're not likely to be out of time. I've done it in the past the way you want to and almost always have it 180 degrees wrong. :). Doesn't run well that way. - ------Original Message------ From: Mark \"Loeb\" Soldan Sender: owner-xj@digest.net To: xj ReplyTo: xj Subject: xj: Replacing Whole Distributor Sent: Sep 9, 2012 15:31 The distributor on my '96 4.0L XJ has started to squeak when the engine is cold. You may find that you are 180 out. Setting the engine to #1 cylinder TDC pretty much guarantee's you'll get it right. When I've tried to take the short cut, I've found I have to do it over in most cases.........
