Excellent example of how heavily taxed folks are in Europe... all that fine social medicine, six weeks of holiday, great roads and nice clean streets all have to be paid for... so, let's see... you're paying 1.560 euro's / liter of Diesel... and it takes 3.785412 liters to make a gallon... on http://xe.com it says 1 euro = $1.29122 USD so, that's $2.01430 USD/liter or $7.63 / gallon with 57.1% of that in taxes, or $ 4.354 / gallon USD in taxes alone... (Diesel fuel only w/o taxes in IE is $3.276 - our Diesel fuel w/o tax is about $3.78/gal) I just put 14.4 gallons in my Jetta TDI waqon, got just over 30 mpg around town... or about 8 liters / 100 km. (8 liter/100km = 30.39mpg) that would have cost $109.80 in Ireland (costs $60.03 in Washington state) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- REF: US taxes: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/**rate/mf.pdf info on IE taxes: http://blog.aaireland.ie/index.php/2012/12/04/motor-fuel-taxes-ireland/a-breakdown-of-irish-fuel-taxes-and-hikes-in-ireland A breakdown of Irish fuel taxes and hikes 04/12/2012 On current prices*, the rate of taxation on both fuels is as follows: Petrol : Pump price 1.612 Excise including carbon 58.771c Nora 2c Vat 30.2c Total taxes: 90.971c Pre-tax price 70.229c Tax as % 54.5% Diesel : Pump price 1.560 Excise including carbon 57.902c Nora 2c Vat 29.17c Total taxes: 89.072c Pre-tax price 66.928c Tax as % 57.1% There are four forms of tax on fuel. One is excise duty, which is charged by the litre. The second is Carbon tax, which is charged by the tonne. The third is the NORA levy (National Oil Reserves Agency) levy which is 2 cent per litre. All three of these taxes are charged in the same way in that they are fixed amounts per litre and do not fluctuate as the overall price increases. All three are subject to VAT at 23%. Carbon Tax works out at 5.586 cent per litre of petrol, and 6.517 cent per litre of diesel. Both of those figures have VAT at 23% added to them. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL discussion, US state fuel tax rates: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/**rate/mf.pdf - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President) - 2 word summary: Trust Jesus - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Sun, 9 Dec 2012, Stephen Rigley wrote: # Now you see why I ask ;-) http://blog.aaireland.ie/index.php/2012/12/04/motor-fuel-taxes-ireland/a-breakdown-of-irish-fuel-taxes-and-hikes-in-ireland ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2012 12:46:56 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: Diesel at $4.19 vs. Gas at $3.25... maybe I should start driving my gas powered '83 J10 since gas is so much cheaper... let's see, 8mpg at $3.25/gal vs. 30 mpg at $4.19/gal... hmmmm... :) you, know, math isn't my strong subject, but something tells me Diesel is still the way to go... even if my Jeep were like some of my XJs or WJs and could almost do 18 mpg in town... it still might be better to pay a bit more for Diesel... :) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) RTB&TRSTGZS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Mon, 10 Dec 2012, Jim wrote: # Gas is $3.25 here in Lynnwood now # Jim # ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2012 23:22:30 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: fuel cost per mile calculator one of the folks on the TDI list shared a link to an on line costs per mile calculator... heavily biased toward stinky gas engines... made no mention of environmentally friendly and fuel efficient Diesels so I rewrote their code and added some conversions for my friends who suffer under the metric system. :) Enter price per gallon, miles per gallon, and it will provied the costs per mile. http://meistertech.net/Diesels/costs-per-mile.html MPG = total miles divide by number of gallons used. * For accurate results, average at least 3 tanks 1 US Gallon = 3.7854 liters 100KM = 62.14 miles (to get USD value, conversions at http://xe.com) liters/100km miles/gallon 15 16.21 14.5 16.77 14 17.37 13.5 18.01 13 18.70 12.5 19.45 12 20.26 11.5 21.14 11 22.10 10.5 23.15 10 24.31 9.5 25.59 9 27.01 8.5 28.60 8 30.39 7.5 32.42 7 34.73 6.5 37.40 6 40.52 to convert either way: divide 243.125 by (liters/100km) - to get MPG by (MPG) - to get liter/100km enjoy john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - Trust Jesus - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #3446 *************************
