Nice cars. Pretty safe bet. John - ------Original Message------ From: JeepNut Sender: owner-fsj@digest.net To: Fsj To: xj ReplyTo: JeepNut Subject: fsj: OT - cop cars Sent: Jan 16, 2013 20:47 Guys I put the wife's 98 LeSabre in a ditch off an icy ramp a few weeks ago. I got under it last weekend and it could probably be fixed but would take twice what it's worth in $$ to make it happen. So I've been searching for a replacement vehicle and have found that the Grand Marquis is apparently a VERY well recommended vehicle for a lot of reasons. And they are fairly hard to find for a good price w/ reasonable mileage around here it seems. They're holding their value nicely. Municipalities loved the Crown Vics as they've proven to be strong, reliable, had very few recalls, and heck they made that style forever so the bugs are pretty much put to rest and parts are plentiful. The Grand Marquis inherits all those traits. I like them, and I like the full frame and the RWD aspect. What can I say. I AM an old man. lol We both hated that Buick as it seemed to slip and slide easily on even the slightest wet road. What's got me baffled is that I've encountered a few Crown Vics that are advertised as police fleet turn-ins with what I consider very low mileage. A 2001 w/ 143000 miles. Really? How can that be for an ex-state troopers car? Shouldn't it have 600000 miles after having been in service for 10 years? (exaggerating a bit of course) Found another 2001 with 93500 miles from a "small town police dept." Wants $3500. I'm thinking I ought to grab that in a hurry if they answer the ad... Any of you guys work with law enforcement or can explain how that makes any sense? I think a Vic or Grand Marquis with only 150000 miles or so would have about that many more miles still in it. I know they might have been in a few chases here and there, but would they really be "ragged" at 150,000 miles? And some aren't police cruisers but fire cheifs cars, or detective's cars, city vehicles, etc. so shouldn't have been beat to death. Or are these just scams that I need to run from? Thanks in advance. - -- Registered Linux user #287453 ######## john @ wagoneers.com ######## "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" - Theodore Roosevelt ######## two word summary: Trust Jesus ######## ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:11:40 -0500 From: Bob Subject: Re: xj: OT - cop cars I've had a few old cop cars, and until recently the dealership I worked at was a Lincoln-Mercury dealer as WELL as a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer...... The best one I had was a '78 Fury w/440 4bbl and full package (just like the green one in the old TV show "Hunter") and was a former Vermont detective vehicle. It was awesome. Went well into the multiple hundreds of thousand miles and ran perfect 'til the last day.....sold to a mailman. The last one was a '00 Crown Vic. A local NH municipality police car...complete with reflective striping and the glue from the letters that said "police" would reappear whenever it was dirty. This one ran perfectly as well 'til it had to go due to rust issues. The issues with these cars are leaks and rust. The oil pan rusted through, the trans pan rusted through, and all the emmissions stuff (mounted on TOP of the gas tank) rotted away. The only time the car did NOT run like the day it was born is when a plug cracked, then the ignition coils (one for each cylinder, expensive if you don't buy generics on the web...8 generics are the price of ONE Motorcraft) started crapping one by one. Once I did a set of plgs and coils, it was perfect and stayed that way. Unfortunately, even with the best of snows on it the tires would spin as soon as you put it in gear on snowy roads. Part of it was the wide low profile tires, and part of it was the way it is weighted. I imagine a trunk full of sand might of helped, but even an old Nova would do better in snow. Overall though, great cars! Just be sure to swap over to KYB Gas-a-just shocks on all 4 corners.....amazing difference in ride control. Good luck! The XJ used a 229 behind the V6 in 85 and 86 if I'm not mistaken. I had the pleasure of having dinner with Tom in Orlando in 1999(?), got to see one of his Jeep Wagoneers... so distressing to see jeeps with rust... :) but, it helps me cope with the lack of sunshine here... :) whaddya want? rust, or mold? (well, it's really not mold, it's moss... I think...) I mirrored tom's site once a few years ago... (looks like 2009) http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Tom_Collins-oljeep.com/ http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Tom_Collins-oljeep.com/oljeep.com/ I really need to clean up my website. I can't even find things... I'm afraid to just move stuff around because of breaking links people have used for years... and because I never really get the time to finish what I start... :) I've approached a couple folks about buying the domain name "wagoneers.com" as it has some commercial value and I simply don't have the time or discipline to do anything with it. If you're interested in it, make me an offer... I'm trying to simplify my life a bit... also, trying to liquidate some of my shop manuals and Jeep toys and tonkas, pictures at: http://wagoneers.com/sell/ meanwhile, in other news: 1)Superdawg - talked to curtis last week, he was painting the cab and will call me to help him get it on the chassis... have several friends willing to help bring the project home. the SD33T/727(rv)/np208 is in the frame... 2) my son is building a 4bolt chev 350 to install in his '85 GW that snapped the camshaft in the 360 he's not sure what trans he'll use yet... I'm trying to encourage him to keep the 4x4 system intact. not sure if a TF727 from a jeep will hold up to the power he's building... he bought a short block from a company in SD... spent more on the bottom end - block, pistons and crank, than I did for most of my cars... :) 3) my white J10 just got 3.31 gears, swapped out the 2.72s, also a new water pump and doing fine... well fine is a relative term, it's a thirsty pig... but amazingly it rides better than our jetta or our kj... I rewired under the hood and solved a lot of problems, still need to do a write up on that... need to clean up the wiring in the cab. has four studded snows and ready for snow... (this means it will likely NOT snow... having 2 jeeps fueled up and ready to go is a natural deterrent for the convergence zone!) 4) our 2005 KJ CRD has about 68k on it, gave it the eco-tune and consistently getting 21+ mpg IN TOWN. 5) the 242 xfr case in the KJ CRD makes a groaning sound when in fulltime 4wd high and I turn full lock one way or the other... it has a trash lock... but the groan is clearly coming from the xfr case... we usually drive it in 2wd... someone suggested it was the chain... I'd estimate that the original owner towed this some 30k miles behind his motorhome, the PO was meticulous about maintenance (professional driver) and even used amsoil! This is the nicest vehicle we've ever had, has EVERY option... heated leather, tow pkg, nav, too bad the libery has all the creature comforts of a shipping container. :) the seats, while top of the line are fairly brutal... ride is ok, but it makes us appreciate our 2002 Jetta TDI wagon (which has been getting 31+mpg IN TOWN since I installed the Bosio nozzles for the manual trans (it has an auto).
