Fri Oct 14 11:00:44 2005 RE: Mercedes Diesel into an XJ (or SJ) the two, or three issues to resolve are: 1) engine mounts - not a big problem, the XJ (downsized cherokee from '87-01) have an easy to adapt frame setup, I haven't examined the benz mounts but suspect something could be welded on to sit "on" the frame rails in the XJ. 2) engine to transmission adapter - torque converter? adapter ring? starter? or 3) transmission to transfer case (preferred solution) - divorced setup with an intermediate shaft and braces/mounts for the xfr case, this is the approach I am considering. Wiring, climate control, cooling and such will be issues, but common to engine swaps and easily overcome. The other issue that will be encountered is the oil sump for the benz engines are in the front, this will interfere with the axle and the steering... if a rear sump could be found for the Diesel Benz engine this will solve the problem The same issues exist if one uses a Full Size Jeep. My current plan is to finish the '83 J10 stepside with the 6.2L Diesel, 700r4 and either an np208 or np219 setup. It's got dual tanks so I can use wvo if I figure out a fuel heater. I'm thinking of building out an XJ with a Mercedes 3.0L or 2.5L TD, but this is probably just a mental exercise and will never happen, in part because I'll have a nice J10 and also because the xj doesn't have an easily configurable dual tank capability. http://JohnMeister.com/FSJ/FSJ-charter.html http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/jeep-model-codes.html john meister On Fri, 14 Oct 2005, T David wrote: >-->Hi John, >--> I sunscribe to the Diesel Benz list and I have a >-->question regarding swapping a Benz diesel engine into >-->a jeep XJ model.
