john at wagoneers.com Sat Jul 9 11:04:22 2011 someone asked... :) john Diesel options in a Jeep: 1) SD33T - out of 80 scout - lower power/torque - right gears etc 20/24 2) SD33 - out of cj-10 or earlier scout - " - got 16 - 19 in a cj-10a 3) 6.2L GM - did one in a '91 GW - worked ok - 16/24 - I'd do it again 4) 5.7L GM - if you can find a targetmaster engine might be ok. I would avoid 5) 4.3L GM - don't know much about these, had good rep at the time... I would avoid 6) 6.5L TD GM - plenty of power options, but I'd avoid, not economical, go with a 6.2 rather 7) Mercedes 3.0L TD - I-5 - '82-'84 - fairly economical, enough power, (OM617) - kit below 8) Mercedes 3.0L (TD) - I-6 - '86-'89 - not as economical, powerful, don't overheat head issues, kit below should work 9) Mercedes 2.5L (TD) - I-5 - '87-92? - economical, powerful - not sure if the kit below would work - might 10) Mercedes 2.4L n/a - I-4 - '82-86? - economical, underpowered - not sure if the kit below would work - might 11) Cummins 6BT - heavy, noisy, tall - has been done - I don't want to drive a freight train, weight biggest issue 12) Cummins 4BT - heavy, noisy, tall - has been done - I don't want to drive a freight train, weight biggest issue 13) VW TDI - this is a 1.9L four cylinder... it looks more like a toaster than a powerplant - expensive to buy, rubber band (80-100k), egr will clog up the intake every (40-60k), can be very economical. http://mercedesdiesel4x4.com/HowtobuilddieselJeepWranglerspecsOM617.aspx http://mercedesdiesel4x4.com/ProductsHomePage.aspx http://mercedesdiesel4x4.com/OM617ConversionAccessories.aspx http://www.hpamotorsport.com/tdijeep.htm http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=291918 http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=32526 http://img67.photobucket.com/albums/v203/floridajeepers/Florida%20Jeepers/4BT_in_a_CJ.jpg http://www.jeep2diesel.org/ TDI in a jeep? http://blogs.jpmagazine.com/6667601/editorials/easy-jeep-vw-tdi-diesel-swap/index.html In stock form the VW TDI engine pumps out 100 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, but is said to be easily cranked up to an impressive 165 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque with a simple power flash (The factory Jeep 2.5L puts out 123hp and 145 lb-ft). The 1.9L TDI weighs in at a svelte 265 pounds compared to the Jeep 2.5L at 325 pounds. It's 55 pounds lighter than the four cylinder! In the Jetta the 1.9L gets up to 47mpg, in a Jeep it will likely get slightly fewer mpgs because of the Jeeps added weight and increased wind resistance but it should easily hit the 30-40 mpg range with normal use. VW engineers confirmed that the 1.9L oiling system was designed to handle a 1G environment allowing for 45-degree angles in all directions. An optional deep oil pan may be made available for even more extreme use. ----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us ------------------------------------------------------------------------
