on an 83 parter w/o tilt column I didn't...took a little wresling to get
it out though...if you have a good feel and decent patience you can
probably swap the vacuum lines without pulling the dash. I didn't have
the tools on hand to drop the column easily (I was in VT) though I think
it's only two bolts.

Actually this reminds me of a stupid I made when I rebuilt my
engine... main vcacuum line for the heater stuff...I had no idea what it
was so I tied it back with a bunch of other stuff (including the cruise
control) then I proceeded to drive across the country (through Oklahoma,
Texas, Missouri, etc) with my heater stuck half on sweating like a
pig, and then I drove through Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Mass in
the middle of the night freezing my butt off. I eventually reconnected it
to just manifold vacuum...worked well enough, but it wasn't correct.

Dec 23rd...don't know when I'm coming back here though...it's sort of a
toss up of where I can get the most stuff done. Wagoneer needs gobs of
work, but solar car is getting a whole new front suspension...actually a
prototype of the final suspension...the guys graduating with
undergraduate degrees who have worked on the solar car are generally
getting paid a good $10,000 more a year than the folks who didn't...the
project has good merit even if it is a glorified soap box car. Actually
before the Beginning of May we are supposed to have built and tested both
the prototype and the final new suspensions front and rear...there were a
few design errors in the first suspension such as buckling loads...most
of it is just about ready to collapse and that's without the additional
weight of any of the 1000 lbs of batteries. Also the steering is all
weird on the solar car...nobody quite understood the concept of Ackerman
angle (in a turn the inside wheel has to turn more than the outside wheel)
and due to error correction geometry the car had backwards Ackerman
angle so bad that it would would stop in it's tracks at full steering
lock.

As for the Wagoneer it needs a lot of help too. If the block is destroyed
Jason says he'll sell me the old 360 block out of his grey J-10. I'm not
too certain about the crank on that one though...it's been sitting out of
the engine for several months and may not be quite straight anymore. I'm
figuring that my flexplate is trashed too, and I've still got my
origional harmonic balancer which is probably a little rotten...I'd like
to upgrade it eventually anyway. Tranny was working pretty much okay
until probably the last 20 miles, but considereing the nature of the
damage to my crank (and possibly my block) I wanna go through it...gonna
go ahead and upgrade it too...probably B&M shift kit, B&M TC, and B&M
heavy duty clutches. The heater box has a hole in it and because I dumped
the exhaust in front of the rear axle it drafts real bad so you can't
safely drive it without the windows open which makes for too cold Winter
driving. Needs new (longer) brake lines, new shocks, Gonna probably close
my fenders up with some sheet metal from the newspaper just to keep the
exhaust out until I can repair them correctly.

Then me and a buddy have to fix a chevy that got the wrong oil plug put
in the pan...S-10 I think...they destroyed the pan...I think we're gonna
pull the motor out of that one.

Hi Greg,
My heat door works fine, the cable is in great shape, what I am
talking about is the buttons that dirvert the air to floor or

I got plenty-o-heat, not just where I want it. :-)

My '79 has the same frozen heat control cable. Must've been a big problem
'cuz it sounds like almost all of the '79s have it.

Jeff,

No problem, that's why we're all here. I really like the skyjackers, one
of the other guys in my club put them on his wagoneer too and he loves
them. We both replaced all four springs. About the only tip I could give
you is that after the lift the truck seemed to turtle a little(back seemed
slightly lower than the front) we both ended up putting 2" blocks on the
rear springs to correct this. Everything else went very smoothly. I like
these springs because of the ride and also the wheel travel I get down in
moab. Let me know if you have any other specific ?s.

Ken,

The newspapers are at the printers and should be mailed out shortly. I'm
not an official on any of the trails this year but I was Tailgunner on
Kane Creek Canyon the last two years.
I've done the following trails in my Cherokee(easiest to hardest IMHO):
Chicken Corners
Secret Spire
3D
Poison Spider Mesa
Porcipine Rim
Gold Bar Rim
Kane Creek Canyon
Lion's Back(not hard, just nerve wracking)
Cliff Hanger
Metal Masher
Strike Ravine
Moab Rim(with Egg Ranch Fin and Death Row)
Hell's Revenge(with Potato Salad Hill)
Behind the Rocks(up White Knuckle Hill)
Golden Spike
Pritchett Canyon

I don't know if I missed any but that's all I can think of right now.
There is also one of the guys in our club that has a Grand Wagoneer(The
Griswold Family Truckster) that has done most of these too. I'll have to
scan in some of my better pix and send them to you.

That's mainly because of tire height differences. The springs originally on
all FSJs are within 1" of each other. We did that before on the list by
measuring the distance from the ground to the top of the drip rail just above
the rear of the front door. Then we measured the distance from the ground to
the center of one of the hubs or wheel caps.

Jim, you need everything outboard of the steering knuckles from a J-truck
(3/4 ton or higher) with 8 lugs. You'll also have to run 16" wheels since the
44HD has 12.5" brakes.

Ed, the regulator on the instrument panel just keeps the gauges from

The regulator in the alternator regulates the voltage for the whole truck. If

going to have to dig the whole thing out and change the temp. gauge.

nighmare! Did the factory do it this way or was it the yo-yo
I bought it from? No rhyme or reason to any of it. I fail to see
a easy way to correct it. Big wads of wire below glove compartment
another near the steering column. I hope tomorrow we find one of
the "wads" from the stereo, that would be easy to correct. <<

I don't remember it being real bad above the glove box but, yea; that's the
way they come from the factory. Funny thing is, the wiring has always made
sense when I need to troubleshoot or find a wire?

Like when I was trying to find the wire that powers all 47 of the dome lights
(okay...4 of them). I wanted to be able to leave the doors open without all
the dome lights running the battery dead. Example, It's nice to be able to
leave the doors open, stereo blasting, while you're skinny dipping w/ the
opposite sex in a natural hot springs under a train trestle at 2 a.m. just
before the Sheriff drives up and turns your stereo down. Then he tells you to
get out of the water and leave because you are on private property but,
unfortunately your clothes are up on on of the trestle's supports about 75
feet away and he has no plans of leaving until you both leave. So, "I" end-up
having to parade over and get them.

Anybody ever try the same? ...I mean installing a switch for the dome lights.
There is no fuse or breaker in the fuse box for the lights. They are powered
off the headlight switch with it's own circuit breaker built in to the switch.
I installed a switch under the dash that shuts the dome lights off. The switch
even lights-up when the dome lights are shut-off and I open the door. It's so
kewl.

They used to live in in the mountains of Colorado and one day parked along

 Welcome Matt!

I have figured-out how to get rid of zynet on Yahoo. Hopefully it'll be gone

Matt, Zynet used to host the FSJ list but, the company went out of business.

I'll send separately and "build-up" history. My '77 is basically a

I can see the Shenandoah mountains from my back deck (when the leaves
are off the trees). The highest "hills" are just over 4000 ft. Not
high by Rocky Mtn stds as my father reminds us, but not too bad for the
eastern states. I know some trails that come to within a mile of
Skyline Drive, where further travel is limited by gates.

I guess I should have picked op on it by now, but where do you hail
from, John?

In regard to tire size, I can't say for sure with 33", but to let you

lift (did not extend the bump stops, so should not make a difference in
whether the tire rubs or not).

This my experience with Jacobs: My '77 360 had a "miss" for the 10
years that I owned it, even with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.
This year the electronic module went out, so I finally broke down and
bought a Jacobs Ultra Team (mucho $). The "miss" went away, my tailpipe
is now grey/brown instead of sooty black, and it idles smoother. To be
honest though, I don't notice a seat-of-the-pants performance increase,
and even though I never checked the mileage on a regular basis, I'm not
sure that it got noticeably better. I did get 13.5 on the last trip
(heavily loaded with family stuff, in the mountains).

Would I do it again? I guess so, after all, I didn't send it back on
their 60 day guarantee, and I do love that smooth idle.

I figured they were only good for about 3,000 feet... hmmm...

don't you hate gates?

Snohomish, Washington - about 10 miles East of Everett, 26 miles North
and East of Seattle. About 20 miles north of Bellevue. Find a map,
find US 2, go west until you hit Washington State Route 9, go south
about 8 miles or so and there I am... on the side of a hill, only
350 feet above sea level... 1 mile from my drive is sea level, go the
other way about 2 miles and you're at 600 feet. That 600 foot ridge
runs over to the Puget Sound. Go East from my place and you get into
the Cascades...
