It is tough to explain the differences (pros/cons) of differential systems in only a few paragraphs, but this is how I understand the subject: Open - possible for only one wheel in front, one in back to be spinning Limited slip - same as above, except less likely, because a friction mechanism attempts to keep both wheels on the same axle spinning together. Good for on-road use, helps some off-road too. Does wear out after time. (many types) Lockers - will always spin two wheels on the same axle. Allows turns on pavement because the outside wheel "ratchets" ahead of the inside. Probably intended more for off-road (and makes a huge difference), but can be driven on-road if you can live with the quirks, such as torque steer, and in some cases will chirp the tires in turns. These lockers are automatic, no way to "turn-on or turn-off". (detroit locker and lock-right) ARB locker - allows the driver to decide whether to run locked or not. Possibly the best compromise, but also the most expensive. Also in conditions where you would be running from hard pavement and snow intermittently, then you would be constantly switching back and forth (or just leave unlocked until you really need it). Spool or welded spiders - off-road only. The wheels always run the same speed. > Having all 4 wheels going would be very nice, much easier to > get unstuck and probably double the traction on slick surfaces, probably > use more gas too... Having all four wheels locked on slippery surfaces is not always what you want. Maybe so when blasting thru deep snow etc. , but not in a off-camber curve. Can get you in big trouble, fast. I liked your suggestion for using cut-off bolts as guide pins, I will do that, when it comes time. Ron[Back to Top]
