John,

That FSJ is exactly my '89 GW right down to the color. They said it was
1975.

My cousin, Greg Ray qualified Sunday in the 30th position
at 213.something mph. I will prolly watch his rookie race
till he looses another motor...(that wasnt very nice...)

John, I don't know how it's done but it's sorta like electro plating. Any
fair size city usually has a place that does it. Check with a local
motorcycle shop, it's real popular for custom m/c frames etc. VERY durable
coating though. Maybe Michael can fill you in on the 'how it's done'.

I'm considering buying a 1988 Grand Wagoneer for $5,500. It has 125,000
miles, bad paint and a shimmying front end (at about 55 mph). Other than
that it is in excellent shape (no rust). Is this a fair price? Are there
any specific problems with this year/model? What should I look for? Any
info would be appreciated.

Subject: New Carb/ Old Manifold?

Tom wrote that the most effective performance changes are

1. Headers
2. Carb/ Intake
3. Cams

Do I have to replace the Intake with an Edelbock 1400. I was wondering of I
could put it on my Stock manifold in my '89 GW. I'd like to replace both
but it seems like a hassle. I just replaced all the Vac lines and I would
would suffer but there must be some upside? any ideas.

I was looking at purchasing a 1977 Wagoneer. 47K miles, new clutch, a
little rust. 2 door, stock everything, down to the AM radio. Powered by a
258, it has a 3 speed.

The person is asking $2,000.00.

Comments on this? It drives great, gets decent mileage (though not the
40mpg of my wife's Camry) AND will hold my 10'-6" Weber Performer (with
hatchet fin) surfboard on the roof w/o my worrying about the car taking
off. :-)

John,
I installed the 1400 on my '82 and yes, I had to replace the intake. I
did not investigate an adapter, but I don't think it would work. Going
from a 4V carb to a 2V manifold seems tricky, it would add a fair amount
of space between the manifold and carb. You might have to replace the
air cleaner with some kind of low profile setup which would have adverse
effects to the intake system.
 Changing the intake is not hard, I went S L O W L Y and did it on a
Saturday. Check out the blow-by-blow on the IFSJ web site
