In theory, you should be able to use the intermediate housing and output shaft from a early '80s GM Truck that came with the TH-400 and the NP-208. You would replace the AMC pattern TH-400's output shaft and intermediate housing with the GM truck stuff. Use a Jeep NP-208 for driver's side front output or if you need passenger side front out-put, use the GM's NP-208. Pre-'80 SWB FSJs with a centered rear output t-case would, of course, require a '80 up gas tank or custom gas tank. -- Michael Baxter, 74172.1164-at-Compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA on 23-May-1997 at 23:18:24 PDT[Back to Top]

Punched-out .060 it'll get you 383 cu. in. The SB 400 is a okay engine but if you get it hot, it'll reward you with a dead cylinder. This is due to the siamese cylinders. As a matter of fact, I have a friend with a Blazer that has a 400 with just 50,000 miles and #5 has a whopping 80 psi right now. There is some magical point up around 400 cu. in. It seems engines with more than 400 cu. in. produce torque like crazy. Below that you have to work hard to get any appreciable torque. I saw some data on two otherwise identical engines. One was around 370 cu. in and the other was 405 but, the 405 made almost 100 lb. ft more peak torque. -- Michael Baxter, 74172.1164-at-Compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA on 23-May-1997 at 23:18:28 PDT !^NavFont01F000EMGdHGmMG8CHIE2C686[Back to Top]

Oh I know, I'm glad AMC didn't use the 700R4 in FSJ's. << Hey we can make this an FSJ post easily. I met a guy with a '78 Wide-Track at a gas station last Summer coming back from wheeling. HE had a 401, 700R4, and a BW Q-T. He said it was HUGE overall improvement. Better performance and better gas mileage. The 700R4 is a much more efficient tranny than a TF-727 or TH-400. Even with the 700R4's converter unlocked. IT's a more modern design and it wastes less power in frictional and pumping losses. The 727/400 loose something 35 HP at full tilt. The early 700R4s were terrible for reliability. Luckily for most, they failed long, long, before the end of the warranty and GM had to eat most of the cost. I heard the "big-spline" 700R4s started in '86 or '87. Those are the more desirable trannys for retrofit. Between GM and the aftermarket, there are something like 50 modifications out for the 700R4. The best way to get one is to buy one outright from the likes of Premiere, Art Carr, TCI & B&M. All those companies rebuild them and incorporate all the mods. Just a rebuild kit that has all the mods is around $550 but, you can buy the tranny outright ready to install for about $1100. Of course, the torque converter, TV cable bracket, kit to make the converter lock and the kit to keep the converter locked until 3/4 throttle (normally a lot less) all cost extra. -- Michael Baxter, 74172.1164-at-Compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA on 23-May-1997 at 23:18:32 PDT !^NavFont01F000EMGiHGrMG71HKA336A6[Back to Top]

I am still unclear if you can 'move up' to a 3.xx series of ring and pinnion gear if you have a 2.xx series carrier. I called Reider Racing and the guy I talked to there said that *he thought* that the cut off in gear/carriers was 3.08. That is, gears for the AMC20 rear below a ratio of 3.08:1 use one carrier and gears of 3.08:1 and above use another carrier. Does any one have any experience with this?? I am beginning to think I may try to find a non-posi rear with 3.54 or 3.73 gears and install a Lock-Right type posi unit - they are supposed to be relatively cheap (about $200-$250) and supposedly can be installed without having to 'set-up' the ring and pinion gear.Any have any experience with installing and driving Lock-Rights??? We gotta show those guys on the other side of the continent how it's done... Hey, Tom & Dan, you driving up too? We gonna have us a convoy... :-) You guys say when, and I'll find a suitable place for all of us to gather, will even try to make sure it's better for photographs too... Maybe we can do a little wheelin' at the base of Mount Pilchuck too. Mild stuff, no problems for totally stock rig... you can even do it without reverse!!! :-) way cool... later, john --------------------------------------------------------------- john-at- http://www./~john Snohomish, WA - where JEEPS don't rust, they mold... http://www./~john/statement.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- Full Size Jeep Page Editor - http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/jeep/fsj Pacific Northwest Regional IFSJA Coordinator ---------------------------------------------------------------------[Back to Top]

David, sounds good with me. I'll work on finding a gathering place that has some sort of resturaunt or barbque facility... Ron, anything in your neighborhood? Roti, any ideas? We'll need a fair amount of parking space, preferably in the country. Maybe we ought to look out toward Sultan or Startup, maybe Duvall. Something with some countryside nearby. We'd look like a bunch of bumpkins if we showed up in downtown Seattle... There's a place up near Arlington that the local clubs meet before going on runs, right off of I-5 about 15 miles north of Everett called the Chalet. They'd have the space, the location and decent food, gas stations nearby too... :-) We could run up to Darrington and over the Mountain Loop Road and back to Snohomish/Everett via Granite Falls. Some beautiful mountain countryside, I think the pass will be open by July 5th. We could do a couple variations of this. I'll have to reconnoiter the road and make sure it's open and so on. There are no facilities on that loop. You'll get to see some very rural areas. I'm starting to like this idea. It'll be about a 50 mile loop from there... We could even stop at Big Four Ice Caves and hike up to a glacier, it's only about a mile from the parking lot, it's not too steep. I was able to do it before i had my knee surgery. Java Joe, I know you'll be tired, but we'd love to have you make it over... Brad, you able to do it? It's an easy run up here, and if you have trouble I could probably drag you back down there if you rent the tow dolly... (I sold mine last weekend). Mick, you up to the trip? If you leave on Friday the 4th you should be able to make it here easily by Saturday. From Eugene, Oregon to here is about 5 hrs. I'd guess you're about 6 to 8 hrs from Eugene, right? Speed limit is 70 mph most of the way through Washington. I do have some bad news... my upper field isn't safe for FSJ's... I found out that my drainfield isn't deep enough... I found one piece was broken up near the fence. I covered it with a floor mat and some clay type dirt. I'm thinking about finding another line through the field... If we decide to meet here we could still get all the rigs in my field, we'd just have to be careful where we went... Alise, is Rufus coming too? :-) Any lurkers within 100 miles of Everett? Come on down. Eddie, Saturday the 5th might work for you. We know that Canada does not have a 4th of July... :-) Well, you have a 4th of July, but it's a lot quieter than ours... later, john meister --------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, WA - where JEEPS don't rust, they mold... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Full Size Jeep Page Editor - http://www.off-road com/4x4web/jeep/fsj Pacific Northwest Regional IFSJA Coordinator ---------------------------------------------------------------------[Back to Top]

Bryan Niese is over there too. I haven't heard from him for a while... I like to get over to Leavenworth... Hey, what are you doing this Sunday? My son is off with friends and my daughter and wife and I don't have any plans for Sunday, I might be able to talk them into letting me take Old Blue over the pass for a nice Schnitzel dinner... :-) Maybe we could track Bryan down too, he works for GTE or is it US West??? anyway, he's in Wenatchee. I'm not even 6 miles from US 2. alright... It's amazing how quickly we can put stuff together. I just hope Eddie, Java Joe and Mick can make it. Doing it on Saturday July 5th is putting it right in the middle of a holiday weekend, so some might be off on a vacation, but on the other hand it makes sure we all have travel time. The mountain loop road and the Big Four Ice Caves would be a good trip. I'll have to consider the distance of going the whole loop. Maybe starting in Lake Stevens and going up through Granite Falls to the Big Four Mtn Ice Caves would be plenty of a trip, and we could take a side trip up to the top of Mt. Pilchuck, very nice views on a clear day... Pilchuck is only about 6,000 ft. cool... john meister --------------------------------------------------------------- john-at- http://www./~john Snohomish, WA - where JEEPS don't rust, they mold... http://www./~john/statement.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- Full Size Jeep Page Editor - http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/jeep/fsj Pacific Northwest Regional IFSJA Coordinator ---------------------------------------------------------------------[Back to Top]

Remember Coleman? (can't remember his first name - the weather man... he kept referring to the area where we lived as "the sticks"... :-) > >for extra, extra credit - WHAT DID WLS STAND FOR? :-) he History of WLS ... WLS was originally WJR. The call letters WLS were granted by the FCC on April 11, 1924. The Big 89 actually started out at 870 am. The 50,000 watt blow torch operated at just 500 watts and was licensed to Crete, Illinois. The legendary WLS call letters stood for World's Largest Store for WLS owner Sears, Roebuck & Company. For a time WLS was owned by ABC, not the ABC, but the Agricultural Broadcasting Company. On March 29, 1941, WLS moved to 890 am. WLS has since been owned by ABC, the American Broadcasting Company, ABC/Capital Cities Broadcasting, and now Disney. WLS joined the Top 40 ranks on May 2, 1960 and remained one of the Nation's greatest stations until 1989. Today, WLS is Talkradio 890. http://www.pa.net/~ejjeff/jeffwls4.html > You got me on that one; Sonya quips "wonderful listening station" :) > > Yellow Submarine!
