the 1975 J10 Hydraulic Dump Trailer project
starring john m., chris w., elliott s. and curtis k.
john has built many pickup bed utility trailers, but always wanted a J10 setup.
Chris W. had a dearly departed 4.2L '75 J10 long box with canopy just molding away.
Elliott S. was looking for a cab and other pieces for one of his J-truck projects.
Curtis K. took on the challenge of designing and building the hydraulic setup.
- First set of pictures shows the J10 as it sat for over 10 years in Maltby, WA.
- The next set shows Elliott helping john get the chassis home.
- Then john cuts the frame just behind the cab mounts and preps to attach and weld a tongue.
- Curtis volunteered at this point to weld the tongue since john was between welders.
- john brings the trailer home and uses it without a dump setup for a while... meanwhile
- john and Curtis determine what is needed and john gets the parts on ebay or from the web.
- john brings the trailer back down to Centralia with all the parts and Curtis works his magic.
- The trailer has been in use for almost 10 years and tows easily and the hydraulics work well,
- although if there is a heavy load the bed needs an assist with a bar, but this was partially
intended as part of the design to keep the bed down on the road when empty.
- The hydraulic cylinders operate in both directions, up and down.
- The disc brakes from a J10 were added to the Model 20 rear axle and connected with surge brake.
- A tool box was bolted to the frame and houses a trickle charger.
- The battery and hydraulic pump live under the bed.
- john added a hitch to the back of the trailer and a power source for a barrel lift.
- The trailer has been up and down I-5 and back into Idaho chasing Jeep parts and has hauled
as much as two full yards of 1-1/4 minus gravel... loaded until the tires bulged... and
even then the box lifted with a bar assist.
- The trailer backs easily because of the long tongue.
- The downside of the trailer, if any, is the weight, it weighs 2,000lbs empty.
the project begins one overcast, mizzling Saturday... john, chris and elliott converge
