The Hood Release cable was broken. The hood sticks when it is opend. The bumper was pushed back to meet the body on the driver's side; but did not damage the headlight or turn signal. No front fender damage. We lost one of the driving lights and a rubber bumper guard. I sanctioned the stout ship to be driven again on Friday. That is when the problems began to show. I'd guess U-joints (on the axle), or possibly the ball joint. Your description sounds like a buckling, and I've had to replace _lots_ of U-joints on Jeeps over the years, usually because they're ten or twelve years old and nobody has ever replaced them or kept them properly lubed. Manual hubs can also cause this racket, but unless you've made changes, you don't have those. :) {- Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 10:01:30 EDT {- Subject: fsj: 360 Cold Running Problem {- {- The GW's not running well when cold, but it seems to be OK after it gets up {- to full operating temperature. That it does operate normally when at full operating temperature {- causes me to suspect the problem involves one or more of the thermal {- controls. Any suggestions? As someone else suggested, I'd guess the choke needs to be adjusted. (A low idle setting will also make it hard to keep it running when you first put it into gear; I tend to keep one foot on the brake and one pushing the accelerator a bit when I first start because we intentionally set the idle a bit low.) If anybody needs instructions for setting the choke, let me know. The "stumbling" could be carb-related (either needs adjustment or may just be a bad carb, like the one that used to be on my '88), but a friend pointed out that when the choke is on, since it's running rich at that point, you won't get full performance. If the "stmbling" and sluggishness is just when it's warming up, and especially just the first few blocks (or even a mile or so), it might just be because it's using the choke. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went to college, and it was okay. -- Jim - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 10:00:19 -0500 From: "Landon Tesar" Subject: fsj: J10 departing Mike - is long-bed, short-bed or stepside ??? I'm a CJ man myself but used the truck this summer to haul materials to a youth camp about 50 miles from my home. Originally, I was going to keep it but we are having our second child and I've decided to sell it and buy another CJ or possibly a Wagoneer. As I said it is a 1979 J10, with the 258 inline six, and a 3-speed manual transmission. It runs great and the body is very solid. My dad had it re-painted about two years ago. I don't know that much about full-sizes Jeeps, all my experience being with CJs. It doesn't have AC and I was wondering what I should be asking for it? Pictures on my server comparing tires... http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/tech/Tires-31_10-30_9-P235_75/ also, Costco told me they use a "fitment" guide. If the tire you want isn't on that guide they won't install it on your rig. For our FSJ's they'll only go to 235. For an xj I'd guess maybe 225 or possibly 235. Most xj's came stock with either 205s or 215s... newer ones might be bigger... not sure... Anyway, Costco will mount any tire you want on rims you bring in however. They are concerned that some dipstick lawyer will go after them if they deviate from the fitment guide. A realistic concern with the litigation that goes on these days...
