We were able to drive about three miles up the marked Jeep trail into Cottonwood Canyon in an attempt to reach Cougar Canyon where based on Tom Mahood's web site, we calculated the remains to lie. This canyon was between the ghost towns of Carp and Elgin, NV. Since we reached this point after a long drive far later than we anticipated and with a malfunctioning GPS, the team decided not to try to hike to the site but rather to drive out of the canyon before sundown and try again next month, hopefully with more participants. Three FSJs made the trek, a 1985 piloted by Rob Harrison and his girlfriend Kyo who drove in from Danville, CA, John Miller who drove his 1988 in from Reno and me with my 1969 Super Wagoneer who drove up from Yorba Linda, CA. It was interesting to note that we had FSJs from each historic Wagoneer era, Kaiser, AMC and Chrysler. After we got out of the canyon we drove first to Caliente, then to Pioche where we had dinner and decided that we would try it again in November, either the weekend of 11/10 or 11/17, depending upon what feedback we'd get from other members of the FSJ community. At this point we had a stroke of good luck. After overhearin some of our conversations and seeing all our maps, our waitress of the Grubstake Restaurant asked what brought us to Pioche and we explained our quest. She told us she knew the family that restored the Elgin schoolhouse and said she did part-time work for a local surveyor. We left her with a copy of Tom Mahood's narrative along with a map of what we thought the site to be and the photograph of the site from his web page. She promised that she would talk with the family and give the web pages and map to her surveyor friend. I promised to follow-up with her in a week and we are all confident that when we make our next trip up we will be armed with more information as to both the location of Walt Ray's final resting place and the possible location of the A-12's remains. Rob and Kyo decided to head out to camp out and John and I decided to avail ourselves the hospitality of the Overland Hotel and Saloon for the night. After photographing much of Pioche the following morning John and I headed out for home, stopping off at Cathedral Canyon where we again ran into Rob and Kyo who were finishing breakfast. After a lengthy conversation on our FSJs (what a surprise) we decided to drive back together driving over the ET Highway, NV 375 around Area 51. Although this was a direct rout for Rob, Kyo and John, it was the long way for me but I said it was a great idea since I've done the trip on two other test drives. A few photos of the weekend can be viewed at: http://jeepwriter.homepage.com/A-12trip.html We all had a great time and all felt that it was a successful weekend overall - - we made new friends from the list and had a great time and we agreed we wanted to continue the quest and have other FSJs join us. We all felt that it was just a reconnaissance run and that we will be successful in our quest. If we go up in November, how many of you will want to join us this time? Which weekend is best, the 10th or 17th? Our plans will be to meet Friday night in either Caliente or Pioche, then head to the site from the north through Elgin if we confirm that the site is where we think it is, up Cougar Canyon. If so, we plan to locate the site on a drive/hike on Saturday and if we are unsuccessful, will camp in the backcountry although if desired, others can return to Caliente or Pioche Saturday evening and rejoin the group if desired Sunday morning. If you're interested, E-mail me with your name, phone number, Jeep model, date preference and if you're willing and properly equipped to camp in the backcountry. After I get all the responses, I will set the date and post it to all the appropriate FSJ mailing lists. About the trail. It rates about a 5 although most is far easier to get most of the way up Cottonwood Canyon. My Super is equipped with standard street tires and with one exception, I had no difficulty getting as far as we did - and had no body damage. When I return in November, it will be equipped with off-road tires and I'll leave my hub caps at home. In fact I'm going to start searching for a set of early seventies slotted OEM Jeep aluminum wheels. I'm assuming that CJs from the era share the same bolt pattern? Am I correct? Does anyone have a set available or know of a set available? If so, E-mail me directly off-list. Suffice to say we all had a great time and we look forward to returning next month and having more of you join us. I look forward to hearing from many of you, especially those who wanted to go on the first trip but for whatever reasons, were unable to come along. You need to get a unit that fits in the old style shafts opening. DIN means no knobs, so cutting will be required. About a year ago I had to bring myself up to speed when I put a new radio in my '71. It's been almost 20 years since I'd messed with that chore. It turns out that there were 3 styles of "knob" radios, each with different sized dash holes and knob spacing. The best I could do was a Optimus from Radio Shack with adjustable spacing between the knob shafts. I still had to do minor cutting to get it in. A newer vehicle might not need any cutting.
