The other one is at least snug and holding the assembly to one stop. But it is a good bit larger in diameter, wound with much smaller wire. Doesn't sound normal to me. A: They can have odd springs. >No springs available anywhere around here until Monday ... IF the dealer even has them. I've called every one of the parts stores in the local directory and everyone has said, ... A whut? Naw, man thats dealer stuff. I could call some speed shops in Memphis I guess since it's a Motorcraft dist. but I don't know how to match that stuff out of a Ford book and it's not likely they're showing a cross reference to the AMC 360 so I don't know what to ask for. A: Try for an '80ish Ford high performance dist spring curve kit. >Wish me luck at the dealership on Monday. Hope it's not a timing chain, I hope it's not a timing chain, I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope its not a timing chain....         Aw, who am I kidding? It probably is the timing chain, what with 164K on it, wouldn't it be a miracle if it WASN'T worn out? A: It isn't a dealer item. Hi-Po shop stuff. >Now tell me more about this 3 way timing chain kit? Never heard of this...         Sounds like a gear with alternate keyways cut so you can just slip it on according to your requirement, Advance for holeshots, etc. Is that it?   A: Exactly! The crank gear has 3 slots that are slightly off to each other. >And did I get you right that they drug tested you for a job at a .com? Weird. That whole concept is totally Orwellian to me... A: I report to the desk at Schuck's and druggies make screw ups in stocking, money collected goes missing (even done digitally), the wrong parts are ordered, people go off for no reason and chase customers away, etc. I just become a counterboy to start while I learn the computer skills needed to advance. ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10 EFax:603-215-1688 http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 15:09:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: Re: vin help for Mexico... Assuming your FSJ is new enough to have a vapor recovery system. There is a pressure relief valve in the gas cap which is designed to vent at 1.5 PSI. Next time you smell gas, sniff around the cap and see if it's just the relief valve letting excess pressure off the tank. I catch a whiff from mine from time to time right after shutting it off in the garage and it is relief valve. Otherwise, it doesn't take enough fuel to cause a drip before you are able to smell it. A close inspection of the tank and all the hoses with a flashlight may reveal a wet spot. Taking the spare tire out makes it a lot easier to look.   Michael Baxter, MBaxter-at-Compuserve.com-OR-N7OVD-at-arrl.net http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA on 20-Oct-2000 ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10 EFax:603-215-1688 http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 19:11:12 -0600 From: "Kim Smith" Subject: Re: fsj: huh? I'm sure you'll find a subject you'll be able to help-out on once you've had some experience in that area. I don't know much about the new fancy '80 up tank configuration but, your tank is plastic inside of a metal liner. The liner supports the tank. Keep looking for a wet spot/area. I've forgotten what year your FSJ was but, Jeep added a rivted access cover over the fuel pick-up/sender under the back seat. You might drill the rivets and check all the lines on top of the tank. You'd have to be someone like James who looks at the vacuum gauge hooked-up to many different engines all day for a long time before you'd develop the skill. Personally I can see the needle twitch and I know it is not supposed to twitch like that but, I can't tell you that twitch means there's a sticky valve...for example. But you probably still need one. It's a good tool to have and they're not terribly expensive. $20-25 will buy you a nice one with a big dial and it'll double as a fuel pressure gauge usually.
