The last Sunday auction I went to they'd junk slipped a good looking and good running '72 Mercedes 280SEL 4.5, a beautiful car that is old enough to be smog exempt. The headache with junk slip cars is that you can't save the black/blue license plates and they wind up with a salvage title, which can make them a PITA to resell. They also make you remove it from the lot with a tow truck, whether it is driveable or not - it's illegal to drive one until DMV has reapproved it. They seem to be junk slipping anything that doesn't come in with a smog certificate already in hand. (The last one I went to, 98% of the cars were junk slip cars, including a nice '98 Lumina with 42K miles and no obvious defects.) They may well be dodging liability (I bought a Ford F-150 under their previous policies that required a valve job before it'd pass smog, and I can see where someone less technically inclined might've been majorly PO'd) but they've probably made their client charities a lot less than they could have by this lame blanket policy. I used to buy & sell five or six cars a year from these people, but I quit buying from that auction when they started junk slipping everything. The Catholic Charities auction on Illinois Street in San Francisco is more likely to have FSJs anyway. - --- James Blair wrote: > A: They probably didn't want anyone coming back and > griping about it, or it failed CA emissions and was > an out-of-state vehicle. > > Rob wrote: > Just came back from an Auction in Benicia, Ca - a 84 > Wag was going up for sale. My daughter got rear-ended by a caprice last week. Wierd accident, hit the end of the hitch bar on her bumper, no other contact point. Hit so hard that it caused my rear crossbar to bend, also put wrinkles on the bottom of the frame on either side where the hitch bolts on to the frame rails. The good news is that the entire impact was absorbed by the frame and the hitch, no tailgate or body damage. Drove the Rez home no problem except the accident caused the np219 to go into neutral. I had to drive down to the accident site and put the case back in gear 'cause my daughter isn't mechanically minded. I noticed right away that the transfer case didn't shift quite right. I also noticed that the jeep wouldn't go into park very easy. I crawled under it and notced that the linkage looked canted back at the tranny so I looked at the motor mounts........you guessed it! They had sheared and the engine and tranny had moved back about 2". Found new motor mounts at Carquest, put my hoist on the motor, lifted, tugged, pried, and got the engine and tranny back in position. Boogered my new tranny mount pretty good too as I think that was all that was holding things from dropping on the ground. Had to take the brackets off the engine to put the new mounts on. But I finally got the job done yesterday afternoon. The Rez is safe again and shifts fine again. Now........my hitch ball is a little too close to the bumper to actually hitch up a trailer. Do I dare chain the hitch to an immovable object (like a tree) to straighten things out again or should I have it professionally straightened? I have a very big log chain so I'm not worried about breaking the chain or the tree. I'm more worried about the effect on the FSJ. Any ideas out there? - --Vince '81 Wag ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 12:02:40 -0500 From: "Ray Drouillard" Subject: fsj: Re: Lots of FSJ Work I would have it professionally done for the peace of mind factor. Also, there may be some bending in the rest of the frame. Someone with a frame bender will be able to straighten it out if there is. Once metal is bent, it is weakened. A professional (if he is worth his salt) will be able to tell you if that is a concern. You might end up welding a couple strips of metal to the frame to reinforce it (peace of mind again) Ray Drouillard - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2000 11:36 AM Subject: fsj: Lots of FSJ Work > It is encouraging to know that all of us are out working on our FSJ's. > > My daughter got rear-ended by a caprice last week. It sounds like they came off or the track rusted off the bottom of the glass. You should be able to get the window back into the two side channels and push it up. I'd recommend lowering the tailgate and working the glass out that way... ;) You could remove the two side rails as that will give you more room to work the glass out. Mark where the screws are though or you'll spend more time lining things up when you get everything fixed. Once the glass is out, look for those two arms, and at the bottom of the window. Make sure the two side rails have rubber/felt in good condition and replace if necessary. Then make sure the bottom edge of the glass has the two slots for the arms. You know it could be as simple as the two clips came off... So I'd hold off on removing those side rails unless you have no other choice... I'm cc'ing this to the list.
