I spotted 2 ads at Jet Chev for White Commanche pick ups, but no price listed. I called them up and talked to Floyd and asked about them, and inquired what the price was. He came back and said the one had just sold for $3500, and the other one was the same price, but he'd seen someone had trouble with it, so he'd ask if I could get it for about $1500. My heart sunk when he came back and said I could have it for less, but the clutch was gone, even though someone drove it earlier in the day. I played a hunch and had a buddy drive me down so I could see it, and it was gorgeous (in spite of being white) with only 1 minor dent and a cracked windshield. The interior was nothing to write home about, and needs a super cleaning tomorrow (ceiling sag, dirty seats and carpet worn through) I drove it up front (clutch leaked out all the fluid, and nothing else wrong!) and we signed up paperwork saying I was taking it as is where is and they arranged the price to be just under $1000 so I had no legal leg to stand on to sue, should I change my mind (sure won't! I really LIKE my little Meeper Jeep!) I heard a vac leak, but I said the heck with it, and drove home with my buddy following. Their ad was all messed up too! They thought it was a 2.5L Iron Puke, but I knew that since it was an '86 that it was 2/3 of an AMC 4.0L and Renix EFI as well! They said it was 4 speed, but it's 5 speed! (not sure which one yet, but probably the BA? Or is it a T5?) The truck is 2WD, not 4WD (as I pointed out, and part of the lower price. Do the MJs use the same front axle as the XJ? Or is it different like the rear, which is slung over the springs? If it's the same as XJ, I'll be mad I sold my 3.55 front axle, but I can get more for cheap) Rear axle is Dana 35 (AKA AMC Model 15. I just checked because Dana 44 was a possibilty since it came from Ft Lewis base) Any idea what ratio? 3.55? 3.73? It goes 80mph with no probs with the tiny 205/57R/15 tires and lots of speed left over! The truck has 150,000 miles on it and after I stopped by my son's place to pressure wash the motor, and have him listen, I was able to pinpoint a vac leak. I found a rotted out 90 degree vac connector behind the TBI and it purrs now that's fixed along with a couple other loose connectors. Although the oil light came on for no apparent reason I could find, I'll put my mechanical gauge in tomorrow and find out if there is anything to worry about, or the stupid sending unit needs changing. So, I have a list to work on tomorrow and other stuff soon: (new windshield and rad soon), heater controls have no effect, and I found a pink vac line off under the hood on the passenger's side, but no temp control unit for water flow. No hot water seems to be passing through the heater hoses because the one behind the throttle body is warm, theother is cool, and the rad has a little back pressure (is there an on/off flow control under the dash in '86? I have an '89 heater/AC set up still I can rob if there is). This truck has Power Steering (pretty weird I thought on a light 4 banger!) and I'll want cruise for trips, plus lift the seat and maybe back 1 more inch. The interior is nasty and needing cleaning (I think it was a job site clean up truck because of all the old safety gloves, glasses and other equipment dumped inside), ceiling needs fixing and the rear slider needs a lock (same as I made for Blackie. Very simple) I'll need a cross-bed tool box for my collection and maybe a canopy. Aluminum rims will be nice later (I have 4 steels now) and brake calipers are sticking a bit, but better than when I picked it up. Ebrake cables need lube and adjusting. It has a nice box liner insert, even though I prefer spray on, and the tailgate is even decent! The best part is that I will get about 25-30 mpg (or better from what I heard since it's 2WD) once I change all fluids to synthetic and I'll have a reasonable cost effective vehicle to go to work in, till Blackie gets finished! Anyone know if the 4 banger has the bellhousing mounted CPS or if it's elsewhere like the front? (This engine still has Vee belts, and they SQUEAL when wet!) This motor has a blocked off hole for fuel pump too! ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10 EFax:603-215-1688 http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 06:28:12 -0600 From: JeepNut Subject: fsj: [Fwd: Potential $500,000 with only $25 in] - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Potential $500,000 with only $25 in Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 15:28:30 -0800 (Etc/GMT) From: gtreet245-at-excite.com To: gtreet245-at-excite.com Check this out it is great. I'd love to have an altimeter -- and plan to get one eventually. Another I plan to get that you might consider is one of those yaw/pitch/roll gauages -- well, it's basically just inclination (pitch?) and sideways angle (roll) for cars. But they're probably also in the $30 range, although you can get a few different vehicles in the little pictures on the gauge faces. Would be fun to adapt an overhead console with temp & compass tho, or make my own or whatever. But I still have to get the truck running. :) I plan to monitor trans temp as soon as I have a tranny cooler in place. Oil temp might be nice if I put in an oil cooler. I plan to get one of those semi-circular tilt gauges. I wonder how much it would cost to put old aviation gauges in place for altimeter, compass, etc... probably more than I want to know about. :) My big problem is a lack of convenient place to mount 'em. The 86+ glovebox door doesn't lend itself to mounting gauges like the nice flat 85-. I've got a stack of radios on the tranny hump which I may have to rethink or move so I can put gauges there. No other reasonable unobstructed location other than on top of the dash which I'd hate to hack up. I could replace the heater controls and stereo with gauges, but then where would they go? Hm...
