I finally got a set of Michelin X Radial LTs on the '84 GW! Man, what a difference in the ride with a quality tire! The road noise is lower and the GW holds the road better. Can't wait to hit a patch of ice (ha-ha). I finally got some tunes into the Wag. I put a Pioneer Premier Series Stereo Radio/Cassette/CD controller deck in with a 4 way amplifier and 10 disc CD changer. The speakers are made by MB Quart (German) and the Wag rocks! I plan on making a small cargo carrier box in the back behind the LR wheelwell to carry assorted little things and to help hide the changer. I'll take some pix when I'm done. I am also almost done with the new carpet installation. I put the rails on the floor in the back. (Rob, this is for you -->>) I went to the Home Base store and bought a 72" x 2" wide piece of carpet trim in aluminum. Cut it down to size (around 54") and put it across the end of the cargo area that the carpet manufacturer shorts by 2". (The factory piece is only about 3/4"...) Last thing I have to do for the carpeting is my tailgate. Next on the agenda is the headliner, visors and the alarm system. A: That was too funny! I told them about buying my '86 MJ and how horrified the Chev dealer was to find my MJ was NOT 4WD (as advertised), NOT Chev 4 cyl (even worse, it was an unsupported AMC 4 cyl with Renault TBI!), NOT 4 speed (well I didn't mention it was 5 speed) and the clutch was NOT shot (clutch master cyl was dry!) and the heat didn't work either! (which I found out on the way home) Now that my '86 Dodge van trans is finished (the guys at Sea-Tac trans did right by me!), I have to sell it (after fixing the burnt #6 exhaust valve in the slant six so it will pass emissions and get back 1/6th it's power) so I can get a cheap cube van (the '86 van is too nice to load with junk, and too light for my garage full of junk, plus side windows make me nervous when loaded with metal stuff!) Once my garage is emptied out, Blackie rolls in, and the buildup will begin! My stroker has been gathering dust because I don't want to install it with the Jeep J10 outside, where it can get moisture in while I work on it, PLUS I want to see if my 3" rear lift springs from the '83 Cherokee (Elmo) will fit or not. (Working in the inevitable Seattle rain doesn't thrill me!) It was FUN! (Latex gloves work well, thank you) The drive hub seemed rather dry, so smeared some grease on it, the wheel bearing was in pretty good shape. Will go get some inner seals and do the whole thing soon. The clicking and clacking went away, and I tried as James B. suggested, it wasn't a bearing race. So thoughts are: 1. reseat your caliper. 2. Remove, repack, replace, retorque your outer wheel bearing. (50 ft-lbs, and it gets there in a hurry) Question is the amount of end play in the half-shaft. I was able to move it in and out about 3/8?" This seemed like a lot. Looked like there are two snap ring grooves on the half-shaft, all the play would be removed if the inner one was used, so I left it like I found it(on the outer groove), but are there any other suggestions ? A detailed assembly drawing would be nice. Oh yeah, once I figured out that removing the torx head screws in the door to loosen the entire window regulator, cuz you can't get the track to bend on the rail, it wasn't so bad. That was a result of having loosened every other available screw on the door/motor/rail. Window now goes up and down as advertised. - - Landon 89 GW Austin, TX ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 12:13:24 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: top 4x4 link http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS I've added a new link to a new site called top 4x4 links. check it out... Although I vaguely recall seeing 10,000 lbs for one model, perhaps it was a J20. The factory hitch, a flat bar, is stamped on it that is rated for 3,500 lbs, with a 350 pound ball weight. << '79 Wags/Chero's were rated for 7,500 lbs. with the optional HD trailer towing package. I believe that is as far as Jeep stuck their neck out. I can't find any other numbers. The other optional trailer towing package's (lighter-duty version) included hitch was a class 2 rated at 350/3500 lbs. So I think can assume that a '79 is rated at 3500 lbs. with that option. No need to forward this data to him. He e-mailed me as well and I responded pretty much with the same data above. I stayed up until 3am finishing up the wiring on SuperDawg... everything appeared to be working fine. (except the backuplight on the roll bar) So, I drive to work, flip it to auxillary tank... cruise along, but wonder why the main tank is going down... hmmm... it didn't move much going to work, so I figured it was just settling/adjusting... checked the filters, both had fuel when I got to work (each tank has a clear filter before the selector valve) So I drive home... this time I'm really noticing the main tank dropping... didn't think much of it until I back into the carport and smell gas... So I look by the selector valve and under the hood... no problem... then I look in the back, the auxillary tank was leaking out the VENT by the filler!! Huh? If I was using gas it should have dropped below that level, and it didn't leak when I filled it to the brim. Strange... so I head up to the store and gas station, but turned off the auxillary tank.... got to texaco, filled up the main tank, no problem, no leaks... both filters have gas. Ok, maybe it was just a strange occurence, barometric pressure or something... So I drive from Texaco to schucks to get a voltage tester... and look at that will you... you could follow me into the parking space by the gas stream. Ok, let's turn off the selector valve again, drive down to the teriyaki stand, no puddle. Drive home, park, no puddle... WHY does gas want to leave by the vent when I have the selector switched on??? I don't have the fuel return lines going to it, and I'm not sure they even go to the main tank... I'm 95% certain I hooked up the solenoid fuel lines properly... Could it be that the selector valve is bad?? Maybe I should bypass the selector and connect directly to the auxillary tank to see what happens... Anyone have any ideas??? thanx, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com **** http://wagoneers.com don't leave life without Jesus, please... I'll have to bypass the solenoid and "hard wire" the aux to the carb to see what happens. I suppose I could use the old selector valve... but it doesn't have provisions for the return lines, need them for the fuel injection system I ordered... john :) ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com **** http://wagoneers.com don't leave life without Jesus, please...
