The only difference in the Q-Ts from '73-79 is the '73-'75s had a tube going to the low range unit which the later Q-Ts do not have. I'm not sure of the purpose of the tube. I can't imagine the tube could prevent lubrication somewhere though. 1st there is an overall limitation on towing any Jeep with any drivetrain configuration which is covered at the beginning of the towing section. It limits all towed Jeeps to 30 MPH for 15 miles max. I'd say it is 99.44% likely the corporate legal dept. imposed those limits in the interest of limiting liability exposure. Without the optional low range reduction unit, Jeep says to put the tranny in Neutral, index both propeller shafts, disconnect them and secure them. They mention you only have to disconnect the rear driveshaft if the front is lifted. With the low range reduction unit installed; Jeep says put the tranny in Park, shift the t-case into Neutral and ensure E-Drive is not engaged. And if you think about it, a Q-T with the input shaft disconnected from the output shafts at the reduction planetary should be lubricated the same as normal. Everything from the planetary ring gear down, including the chain, is being splashed by oil or moving in the oil. I would normally have done it weeks ago but, business is keeping me hopping and it was do or die now. So I made plans to get moving early. There were a couple of things I wanted to accomplish on the Chero. and one involved monkeying with the vacuum advance but, I didn't want to do that until after the smog check. The other thing is the tailgate window had given me trouble a few times as I reported before. I suspected the safety switch and had a brand new one to install, but before the end of the morning that would turn-out to be an incorrect diagnosis. The smog check went extremely well as usual. Every system is there and was working as the designing engineers intended: 2500 RPM test: Max CO is 2.00% or less. The Chero did 0.00% Max HC is 500 ppm or less. The Chero. did 004 ppm. Idle test: Max CO is 2.00% or less. The Chero. did 0.00% Max HC is 500 ppm or less. The Chero. did 007 ppm. All the other tests; O2, CO+CO2 Dilution and RPM; were valid. That out of the way, I decided to take a look at the vacuum advance. The story goes like this: With the initial timing set at 16 BTDC, I get 10 plus MPG towing my 5,500 lb. trailer under good conditions. Never worse than 9.5 MPG even in the mountains. But it is slightly more reluctant to start cold and WOT seat of the pants performance seems a little off. With the timing at 13 BTC, it starts right-up and it performs a little better at WOT (wide-open throttle)...if I can trust my seat of the pants calibration. I've been meaning to back that up with some timed 0-60 runs. Remember I'm at 5,000 ft. If I use the 1 degree per thousand feed rule of thumb, I should set my timing at 13 (factory spec. is 8 BTDC for my engine in '79). So I set the timing to 13 BTDC last Summer and immediately noticed a drop in towing gas mileage. The last trip in early Oct. only produced 9.33 MPG. Before I had recorded 12 and 12.1 MPG on one 165 mile leg of that trip...a year apart from each other. Analysis, needs more vacuum advance. I decided to add 4 degrees. That would put me up 1 degree from where I was with 16 degrees initial...if I nailed the adjustment. I established a baseline and this is what my vac. advance was doing: Vac. range from no advance to full advance is 0-9" HG. At 9" HG the vac. advance was adding 15 degrees. Turns-out, the rebuilt distributor I have which replaced the original a while back doesn't have an adjustable vacuum advance like most Durasparks. The rebuilder may have dispensed with the adjusting mechanism when they rebuilt the unit with a new diaphragm. There is a tab on the back of the housing which creates a stop. The housing is cast but, I thought it was worth the risk to attempt an adjustment since I have back-up distributor that belongs to the SEFI project. Plus the tab was obviously bent by the rebuilder to limit the vac. advance. I set the vac. unit up in a vice and used a hammer and a punch to persuade the tab. I rapped it once and checked. It moved. Maybe once more...rapped it again. I reinstalled the vac. advance unit and checked. I'm using a digital advance timing light to measure what it's doing. I pulled it down to 10-11" HG and then checked with the light. Ooops...36 degrees. I had 28 degrees before. I added 8 degrees using my calibrated punch and ball peen hammer. :-O I took a little test drive. No ping and I did not notice it was any more or less spirited at light throttle. This engine has never pinged in the 15 years I've been driving it anyway. Using the advance the timing until it pings theory, I'm leaving it this way. I'll report to the lists what the result is next time I get some mileage #s. Then I went to replace the safety switch which I had bypassed preventively. I pulled the Chero. in the garage and hit the switch on the dash to lower the window. It went down 97% of the way and then stopped. I thought the jumper I made to bypass the safety switch had just been disconnected. Whew, "just in time" I thought. But when I opened the gate the bypass jumper was still connected. Oops. Maybe I was wrong and it is the paddle switch I thought. I retrieved my meter and checked at the safety switch plug. I had 12V with the paddle switch one way and it was grounded with the paddle switch the other way. Well at least 1/2 the contacts in the paddle switch are good. Well now I had no choice but to go in deep. Which I did and many of you can empathize. Once everything was out, I checked the paddle switch and it was okay. That only left one culprit. The motor. I had a NOS motor. To end this long post I have a new motor in the tailgate and the window works better than ever. Plus, I straightened-out those crazy clips which fasten the window bottom channel to the regulator arms and reused them for the second time. I thought for sure I'd break a clip this time. And that's how I spent my Saturday. Some might say I wasted it but, you all know differently :-). I have seen them on military bases as well...mostly at the DRMO boneyards. Too bad the military cuts the frames before they sell them. Don't ask me why the military, in all of its infinite wisdom and glory, cuts the frames of a classic vehicle like that, but they do it. I have been told that they do this because the vehicles are not legal for civilian use, but I have looked at them and can see no differences in drivetrain, suspension, or engines. If you can gain access to a DRMO auction, you may be able to pick one up, if you are lucky, for about $500. It will be strictly a parts truck because of how the frames are cut. If they would stagger the frame cuts, one could weld and box-in the cut thereby repairing the frame and resurrecting the vehicle. But, they don't do this; they cut the frames in almost exactly the same place, making the vehicle unusable. They do the same thing to the HMMWV's (Hummer) that they sell at these auctions. Anyway, I would love to pick one up if I could find one for the right price. Great job on the truck. Now, I am off to figure out how to recover from my catastrophic engine failure. I am almost tempted to pull the engine and start over again from scratch with it. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, all. Talk to you again soon.
