Hi, I look forward to the digest every day, and miss it when it doesn't show up. I went to an afternoon party in the hill country, took the family and all. The host told me about this hill next door that he climbs in his Toyota pickups, and how his old(is new) pickup had Trak-Lok and could climb it fine and his new(is old) pickup has a harder time. Well, I must try this hill. So we rounded up man guests and set off for the hill - GW followed by Durango - I put the Wag in low range, did not air down the tires. we found the hill which didn't look too bad, though the entrance had a ditch in front of it next to the road. The Wag showed true form and heritage, banging the trailer hitch and dragging the front air dam a little, but walked right up the hill, more or less tromping its way, much impressing all who watched, especially host, who was a bit concerned about the Toy and mumbled an explanation - well the Jeep has more weight, so better traction. We had to wait a while for Durango, he took the ditch at an angle, and idled up the hill. Same engine size. Nice to have 4WD during our ice storm Tuesday. Power went out, but Jeep kept going. - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 16:00:18 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: 84 GW axles front axle on an 84 GW was a Dana 44. rear axle was either an AMC Model 20 or a Dana 44. Now if I can only sell Borders and Barnes & Noble on the concept. :-) For those of you that want to make one last attempt before we start printing tomorrow, here is a direct link to PayPal that bypasses both the layout and payment pages I've posted on homepage.com. https://secure.paypal.com/affil/pal=rmsquaredjeeps%40aol.com I just tested in the AOL browser and it worked 10 out of 10 times. It will bring you directly to the PayPal sign-up page. Once there, sign-up and use rmsquaredjeeps-at-aol.com as the payee and be sure to write your shipping address in on the comments box. If I get your order in first thing in the morning when I log on, usually around 6:30 AM, you'll be assured of getting a first-run edition FSJ 2001 calendar. Mark is hoping to get the printing and boxing done over the weekend and ship calendars starting on Monday. Everyone owes him a word of thanks s I've put him through hell waiting until the last minute to get the finished images in to him. That's it from Yorba Linda, CA. I've done all I can do. It's a mild L/S until you touch the brakes. For snow and ice you want open axles... street manners are important to me. If I was going to make a serious trail rig I'd definetly go with a Detroit Locker fore and aft, they are less trouble on the trail than ARB or any other setup... I'll have to wait a few years for a good used WJ, light color, moonroof, 4.0L and QUADRADRIVE... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 22:00:20 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: the new electric locking true-trac >Subject: Re: xj: Re: Finally, the locker John has been looking for! >I hadn't noticed that, but I am SERIOUSLY dissapointed that it's based on >the Tru Trac design and not the venerable Detroit locker. maybe required >to avaoid patent troubles with Toyota ?? Still - pretty dissapointing. Well, since I've had both a Detroit and still have a True-Trac, I'll GLADLY take a true-trac that locks up. I totalled my Jeep because of the Detroit Locker. Sure, it was my fault, and I can't prove it, but I know I wouldn't have nailed that tree trying to powerslide if I had a limited slip or an open axle in the back... I've been doing 'em for over 30 years... that was the first time I tried one with a locker and the first time I hit a tree... It's also the last time I will do it with a locker because it's GONE. :) I put the trash lock back in and if my wife ever lets me wheel with it again I may consider this locking true-trac in the rear. As far as the True-Trac, it's impressive. It's weird, but impressive. I love it. I wasn't going to do it, but Randy talked me into it. I'll start heading up a wet grassy hill, tires slip, I lightly touch the brake and you hear this kind of a whine and both front tires start pulling... it's pretty cool. Of course it has it's limitations, hence the limit of 33" tires. If I'm in real serious stuff it'll certainly not work like a Detroit locker, it starts acting like any other limited slip, and well, slips, but not as soon as the all but useless trash lock... BUT THAT'S WHERE THE ELECTRIC lockup will be AWESOME, when I really need it, it'll be there. Kind of like an ARB but without the extra air compressor. :) I'll have tight turning characteristics like I have now, good street manners and tractor mode at the flip of a switch. (reminds me of the locking device on many of the tractors I've had... you stand on this lever and it spools the axle... very handy when you're up to your underside in mud or water...) Of course someone posted info on the OXlocker on the FSJ list, but it's only for the Dana35 with one for a Dana 44 coming out Feb 2001. It's almost as much as an ARB locker... well, less if you consider the air compressor that's needed for the ARB. My '83 J10 has an open Dana 44 in front, the True Trac that locks is my first choice, the powerOx or whatever is second and then ARB third. Like someone posted, the longer we wait, the better it gets. :) I wonder how long before they do the Model 20 axles... :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 22:18:45 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: FSjs At 11:07 PM 12/14/00 -0600, Lee Helbig wrote: >John, > Can I put them on my Bumper? Why not move the lists to someplace like (egroups, topica,...)? 8. What is Krusty Motorsports, anyway? The Meta-FAQ 1. Why don't my postings go through? There are several things that may interfere with postings making it to the list. a) Are you a member? Some read the ftp archives rather than receiving the list in email. Persons who read the list via email are automatically members, but readers of the FTP archive are not, and need to contact me (rwelty-at-krusty-motorsports.com) and get your name added to the list of "permitted senders". b) has your email address changed? some of you have had changes in your email address. your old address still works, and is still on the list, but your From: line shows a new address. this can happen for various reasons; you may have changed jobs or ISPs, and left a forward in place, or your IT staff may have fiddled with the email system. you will need to unsubscribe your old email address and subscribe the new one. this may require my involvement, if you can't figure out a way to get your old address off the list using the conventional majordomo commands. you can use the majordomo "which" command to probe for old addresses. send a message to majordomo-at-digest.net with one or more which commands in the body, one per line. to check for potential addresses for Fred Flinstone, formerly of bedrock.org, the following commands can be sent: which flintstone which bedrock note that the matches above might return any of the following addresses, if they appear in the list (in other words, you can use vagueness and incompleteness in your recollection as a tool): Fred.Flinstone-at-bedrock.org fflinstone-at-wilma.bedrock.org flintstonef-at-bedrock.com c) do you have more than one email address? if so, only the subscribed addresses can post, unless you contact me (see 1.a) above for relevant information) d) are you using (intentionally or accidentially) special "features" of your mail client? [this section is no longer operative, as the demime software now strips html, attachments, rich text format, etc. from postings automatically.] e) are your posts too large? there is a 10,000 character limit on posting sizes; this is done for various reasons. you can always split up large postings to get mail through. f) are you including majordomo commands at the start of your message? administrivia control is turned on; this is a trap for things like "unsubscribe" at the start of a message. try to avoid obvious majordomo commands in the subject and the first 10 lines, or misspell them in obvious ways (e.g. unzubscribe, 1ndex, h3lp, g3t, etc.) g) are you triggering spam traps? some things are red flags; for example, the following phrases in subject lines are automatically blocked: Important Message From growth stocks free calling card direct e-mail secrets Merchant Account Mass Marketing make money fast Pediatric advice Email ? Million People what "they" don't want are you being investigated the actual list is quite a bit longer; i think you get the idea. h) are you using "funky" character sets? [7 bit restriction lifted experimentally on 8/2/00 -- film at 11] unfortunately, there are "issues" if i permit any character set other than old fashioned 7 level ASCII; therefore, you need to avoid national character sets that include various accents, umlauts, national currency characters such as the British pound symbol, etc. i) are you unintentionally including complete digests in your reply? You need to check and make sure you cut down replys to the minimal size; digests are between 20,000 and 25,000 characters in length, and if you include a complete dige
