It's a bit cool here to be running around as I'm dressed. :) My immediate plans are to get stuff unpacked, fixed and cleaned up, then help get SuperDawg back on the road ASAP. Need wheels... my Benz is acting up again, bad injector after the bad fuel, Diesel ain't like it used to be... :( Then we need to get my wife a new little jeep. :) glad to be back on the mainland. it was nice, but it just wasn't a place you could stay for very long. :) Although I'm sure I would have been able to stay longer... ;) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com via PINE on Linux **** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://junkscience.com ** http://snopes.com ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA ...don't leave life without Jesus, please... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 07:20:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeremiah Westpfahl Subject: fsj: Dash Woes I posted a couple days ago about needing some dash parts to fix the light switches in my 88GW...Well I've looked at it closer now & I think I'm in trouble. Someone has tried to take the light switches out to work on them or something & broke(& lost) 3 of the 4 tabs that holds the 2 switches to the plastic dash. Worse than that some designer genius has decided that the entire dash needed to be made of one piece of plastic, so I can't just replace the panel that's busted, it's part of the whole dash. I'd say that this was the brain-child a Dodge designer since the 84-85 GW I looked at recently had a pull type headlight switch down lower instead of the plastic rocker type switch used in my Jeep. Has anyone with experience with later model GWs gotten into this? Is there anything I can do? Would it be possible to change my complete dash over to the older GW style(mid 80s I got one for parts coming in) w/o too much modification? How do I remove the plastic part of the dash, is that piece easy to remove or does it require a complete disassembly of the vehicle? I can get some digital pics taken & emailed out to anyone who's willing to offer some advice if it'll help. Thanks Miah Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I'm purging... ...local jeepers know where I am. :) most stuff free, the really good stuff is going up on ebay, or steeply discounted. :) Stuff that I have to ship will go up on ebay. I've already emailed a few folks this morning that were interested in some of my parts. Alan, I remember I have another XJ wiring harness under the house, pretty sure the front light section is intact, wander over or send Paul. ;) Karl & Jay, I didn't make it down to Olympia for the men's retreat, come on by anytime today or tomorrow afternoon. :) I'm tired of the clutter, mess and just want to simplify... the J10 is getting a new driveline, soon as we get the Benz sold we'll get my wife a new XJ. Looking at XJ's in the $5k and under range right now, then when the Benz sells $9k and under. Any suggestions on XJ's? Was there anything to look for in the newer XJ's that I may not be aware of? I'm not terribly familiar with the '90 and up models. I tried to talk my wife into a newer GW, but I couldn't make a good case knowing the issues with the 360, tailgate and fuel economy. She is a total XJ Cherokee type Jeep lover. Which is cool with me. They're easy to work on and very, very reliable, and, as we found out, very safe. :) BTW, dropped the price on my '83 300SD to $4500. Also have an '87 Cherokee that I'll sell cheap. It's at $1,800 right now, but I may fix more things, I'll keep a running tab on it. It's super clean. (and my wife would really like me to sell my '67 J-100 Panel, but I've got it hidden 80 miles away... :) I really don't need the Panel, but on the other hand I've looked for over 5 years for one... I'll just have to clean it up some before bringing it home... A beige paint job as one color would help greatly. ;) back from Hawaii... it was nice, it's much greener here. don't mind the rain and clouds. not even cold, kind of funny... went to the grocery store on the way back from the airport, shorts, sandals, loose shirt, others coming in with long pants and coats... ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 15:16:16 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: New to FSJ At 06:10 PM 6/2/01 -0400, TPD305-at-aol.com wrote: >Hi John, I'm new to the FSJ web sites. The service manual (1977) doesn't describe any symptoms like oil blowing out of the dipstick. :) (since CJ7's were only made up until '86 or '87 and never had a 4.0L I'm assuming you have the 4.2L. And since you mentioned a TH400 I know it has to be a pre-80 vintage CJ7. :) I'm by no means an expert on the bobtails... never had one, might never have one... but I've had a few TH400s'. :) The service manual does mention a few things that might be relevant, concerning Vent Pipe Leak: 1) transmission overfilled 2) water in fluid 3) filter o-ring damaged or improperly assembled causing oil to foam 4) foreign material between pump and case or between pump cover and body holding pump halves apart. 5) case porous or pump face improperly machined 6) pump to case gasket mispositioned 7) pump breather hole blocked or missing. 8) hole in intake pipe 9) check ball in forward clutch housing stuck open or missing. All that said I recall a problem my dad had with his new '64 Pontiac Catalina, it did the same thing, turns out that the technician (called a mechanic back then) hadn't seated the dipstick tube all the way in and it blew it out... that's the story the dealer gave us any way. :) They replaced the dipstick and that was the end of that story. Glancing through the other possibilities I'd look at the vent tubes and make sure they're clear and not bent somewhere. Also, did you recently have it serviced or change the fluid? If it's been recently serviced by a shop, they did something wrong, if you changed your own fluid and replaced the filter, you didn't get it all back together correctly or overfilled it. :) If you don't have any shifting problems this is probably a pretty simple problem. The other thing that came to mind is the modulator, as it's vacuum operated... but I can't quite figure out how that would cause fluid to come out the dipstick tube. So at this point I'm gonna swag it, (scientific wild animal guess) that your vent tube is blocked or you over filled it. Most of the time problems that just pop up like this are usually not serious... Let's hope that's the case here. :) later, john meister snohomish, wa usa - ---------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.helpmewithbiblestudy.org/ http://www.freegift.net/ - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1335 **************************
