That's why race cars can run so rich w/o ping. They usually run WAAAY above stock spark!) Cam timing (too far advanced makes more ping. Even 4 degrees makes a HUGE difference) and spark plug heat range (too hot of spark plugs have a LOT to do with ping!) If your motor consumes oil, it can pump the running compression up a little higher too. Heat soak from sitting all day, and possibly a slight uphill on your way home (negligible to the eye due to trees and such leaning the wrong way, throwing off the illusion of level ground and "anti-gravity" areas) Cooler evening temps or warm temps? Warmer air makes for poor cylinder filling and power. Cooler air makes for more cylinder filling, and increased compression (Geez! They get you coming and going!) That's why I do engine timing outside during temp extremes, rather than inside a garage that is winter heated, or summer AC'd. From: JeepNut Hi all,         Well, anyone wanna go there?                 I usually have reverse logic, so ping being lean must be right, because if you had asked me, I would have said that being rich makes it ping.                 It seems to me that if the mixture were lean, it would be even MORE difficult to have ignition before the spark. Of course compression can fire the mixture, (as you diesel-lovers know) but I don't think I'm getting pre-spark compression fire. Carbon build-up, hot spot,... OK I can buy that, but I don't think I've got carbon buildup -at least not bad enough to be cooking red hot & fire the mixture early, or so thick that the compression is raised) And my pinging is very particular, it doesn't do it all the time. Usually only on the way home in the evening. I usually drive it a little hotter and the temp is significantly up.... it's another angle I'm pursuing...                 But in my mind an unusually rich or slightly rich mixture would be more susceptible to an early fire than a mixture short of fuel.                 Thanks to all. :-)                 JeepNut ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 18:29:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck2-at-webtv.net (jim blair) Subject: Re: fsj: overheating and happy 4th of July A: Your waterpump may be have lost the impeller (or pieces of it) I added 40 below to mine (we had high 80s today and concrete increases it) The thermostat may be letting the water flow through too soon, which doesn't give the water in the rad enough time to cool off. How old/thin is the antifreeze? That lowers it's efficiency. The extra temps may have stirred up junk in the block and rad that are now clogging the rad's arteries. (Speaking of clogged arteries, I just finished off a nicely roasted chicken breast, a pile of buttered (corn margerine actually) veggies and a bowl of grits with chicken broth, jalpeno peppers stirred in and yet more corn margerine! Yum!) Check price on a rad tomorrow from 1-800-radiator, and ask for the internet discount!
