Holy toledo. JC where'd you get the police pushbars??? I get a lot of branch hits on the trails here, to be sure. I ended up mounting shorty spring-mount antennas on the roof. You'd think that'd be the worst position, but actually it works incredibly well. The 2m/70cm is a 17" Larsen and takes lots of hits without any trouble, the 30" Hustler CB antenna hits more often but is on a real flexible spring so it isn't a big deal either. Prior to that I had a non-spring K40 magmount on the roof--bad idea. I've also had good luck with a fiberglass on spring mounted to a rear bumper (waggy) just between the tailgate and taillite. I actually have the worst trouble with the factory radio antenna and one day I'll replace it with a retractable style or at least a spring mounted style. When I get the safari rack and lites on it'll be interesting to see how often they get whacked and what I have to do to prevent damage. I'm also planning to add a 6m mobile antenna on the rear center of the roof; I may just have to remove that antenna when I'm off-road. Also some clearancing apparently needs to be done on the block. Some of the Dick Datson books talk about this in detail and I'm going off of my memory having read this section only a couple times. Considering a 360 rebuild with some basic hardware goodies can easily reach towards $3000 ... I wonder if a stroker project, especially with custom pistons, wouldn't be cost-prohibitive? Kept seeing trash on wheels for $4000 regardless of age condition etc. Kaiser CJ5 so rusted out the body was resting on wood blocks on the frame. Another Kaiser with a nice oil and coolant mixture on the "newly rebuild" V6. An 80's with a hosed tranny. A 70's CJ5 that had sat outside for 2 years. An 80's CJ7 so rusty the quarterpanels would oscillate violently in a slight breeze and the springs so stiff I thought they'd welded the axles to the frame. Took two years of looking at overpriced rejects before I realized I could get an FSJ in superb shape for less money. Many CJ's aren't worth this kind of scratch, but they are highly sought after so people think they can charge a lot. You may not be able to go top down in an FSJ, but after you do a lift, tires, and lockers, you should paint it yellow cuz it'll be takin' CJ's to school. Actually, I thought about it a bit more and I may have found the solution. I checked the automatic transmission fluid level and it was slightly below the add line. I added a full pint to bring it back up to the full mark. I took it for a drive and it performed without any problems. I'm going to keep a real close eye on the trans fluid from now on. I am going to check the fuel pump, change the plugs, set the timing, and replace the emissions control system check valves as discussed and then see how things go. As for the rest of the 1982 model truck that the axles used to support, I'm parting it out in a swift and timely manner because it's not condusive to the sale of my home to have an old Jeep truck body and frame lying out back.......or I could throw it in as a deal closer?? So get in line and don't fight over it, just let me know if you're interested in all or part of this sweet piece of Jeep memorabilia. It has good front fenders, grille and cab, seats and glass, the engine ran when it was driven to the repair shop, no trans or t-case, and the longbed is in decent shape with minimal rust and might even make a good trailer for someone in need. If no one bites on the parts then it's headed to the crusher soon, so don't delay on this sweeeeet opportunity. One of the biggest problems that I see with late model wags is a bone headed mechanic who does not understand the air injection system, attempt to put it back together. When I purchased the USS GW, which is an 89 I did not understand the system; but I knew it was put together wrong. Most mechanics do not work on GW's on a regular basis, if ever; so yours may have been the victim of mechanic ignorance. It scares we when the kid turning the wrench can tell you why he thinks a honda is a hi performance car; but he has never heard of a Hemi Cuda. You want the Hemi Cuda guy working on your GW! OK here is what you need to know to get your system back together. First go to your favorite Chrysler / Jeep Dealer and get to know the parts manager; hope that he is older then 12. Then get him to print off the page from the parts manual that shows the plumbing for the air injection system. Then take this picture out and look at the plumbing on yours. People really mess up the flow on the driver's side T fitting. If your hoses are not the factory originals, go back inside the parts department, and order the correct factory parts. The stuff in the after market is just not the right stuff for the job. These factory molded pieces are just the ticket to keep your rig running right. While you are buying your parts, order a pair of those check valves from the dealer. I kept using after market replacements for those valves from the good auto parts places in town, and the discount places. These valves would cost me about $4 and last about a year. Then I purchased mother MOPAR's valve. It had a totally different internal design, and was just a heavier part to hold. So I concluded that heavier meant better metal. Well I have had these for over a year with no signs of there deteriorating. As for your loss of power, you may have a clogged catalytic converter. It might not be a bad idea to switch out to a high flow unit. You will feel a difference in performance. I would also guess if you are venting hot exhaust under hood, you might be toasting the Ford Durraspark module. That unit does not like heat. This could be causing it to do strange things to your timing at WOT. Autozone has a great price on the Duraspark unit, and they warranty it. I would pop one in to see if it helps.
