(I still remember the Superhetrodyne tube radio I had to assemble in electronics class in High School. :) Sams Photofacts were great, used them to repair TVs in the '70's. I believe ITT bought them in the early 80's. I sold off all my tube testers, oscope and VTVMs years ago...) Anyway, he's looking for 12v type tubes and radios... john From: jmotohashi-at-amada.com (Jerry Motohashi) Cc: "john" Subject: 12V-Plate-Tube type Car Radio Hi Dan, My name is Jerry. John forwarded your email to me. I'm a tube radio enthusiast. I've been collecting tube radios since 1965. I also got many Sam's Photofacts lately. And I found an interesting car radio model, which is a Mopar Model 845, 846, it was installed on 1967 Dodge or DeSoto automobiles. The radio used "12V tubes", such as 12BL6(RF), 12AD6(Conv.), 12AF6(IF), 12AJ6(Det.), and 12K5(Amp.) These tubes requires only 12V DC for their plate voltages. However the outside looking of these tubes are same as regular 7-pin tubes, like 12BE6-12BA6-12AV6-35C5-35W4. I would image that same type of the car radios were installed on another automobiles in those days. On the other hand, the other type of 12V car radios existed in the '50's and early 60's. They used a vibrator generating AC voltage, and then by transformer and rectifier, supplied DC 150V - 250V to their regular tubes. I'm looking for first type of the 12V-Plate-Tube car radio. And if the radio doesn't work, I can fix it as long as all the parts there. Thanks for sending me information and finding radios. I used to have a low RPM stumble when I accelerated from stop. The stumble is now gone and the Wag definitely has more power and drives a lot smoother. Funny cause somebody on the list mentioned that when they changed their plugs for the first time they found that the last plug on the passenger side by the heater box (#8 I believe) was a different brand from the other seven and had obviously not been changed in awhile. Well, same deal on my truck. Seven were Bosch platinum and the last one was an old Champion plug that was pretty well fouled. Thanks goes out to every one who gave me tips on the change. Thanks in particular to JC Jones for advising me to get the below mentioned tools. The stubby hinged head ratchet is one of the handiest tools I ever bought. I used this for most of the plugs. I managed to access every plug from the top of the motor thanks to skinny forearms. I also picked up a 24" speed wrench and some extensions but I didn't try out the speed ratchet yet. Now that the plugs are threaded on real clean with anti-seize they should come out nice and easy next time and I'll give the speed wrench a try. I also finished up the bigger job of changing out both air injector manifolds, check valves, and hoses. But I will describe that in another email to keep the threads easy to find in the digest. Now I'm looking forward to checking the timing and changing the transmission fluid pan seal. I initally attempted to pull of and replace just the check valves. About a half hour into the job I realized that there was no way I was gonna get the valves off without trashing the air injector manifolds. So I decided to replace both air injector manifolds along with the check valves. First I moved the air cleaner out of the way and completely dismantled the air injector system to give me some room to work. I also pulled out all of the spark plug wires cause I had planned on changing them anyway. Thanks to your helpful comments I miraculously pulled all seven hollow bolts on the air injector manifolds without breaking one! I used a whole can of penetrating oil and let it soak in real good and gave each joint a few taps with a small hammer to break the rust seal. I took them off REAL slow, dousing them with penetrating oil as I went. After I pulled them out I inspected the bolts to find that a few of them were pretty well heat damaged and were twisted pretty bad when I removed them. Thank God that none of them snapped off at the exhaust manifold! So I decided to change out all seven hollow bolts, including the one that has the extra stud for mounting the check valve to the catalytic converter, even though it cost me $22. I put everything back together with antiseize in case I ever have to take it apart again. While doing the job I noticed that the plastic conduit that goes over the wiring harness along the valve cover on the passenger side was melted off from the hot exhaust gases coming out of the check valve on that side. I cut out the bad section of conduit and spliced over the bare section with some brand new conduit and wire ties. I can imagine it would suck to have that harness melt down. Now the Wag is driving great and there's no exhaust blowing out into the engine compartment. The air hoses to the check valves are warm to the touch but not hot, even after driving for a half hour or so. Seems like the new air injector manifolds and check valves are doing their job nicely. Mopar parts from the dealer cost me: 2 air injector manifolds at ~$66 each 2 check valves at ~$27 each 6 bolts at $5 1 bolt at $22 three hoses at around $5 each one plastic tee at around $8. 14 sealing washers at around $15 grand total in parts was around $275. Somehow it doesn't feel so bad to put this money into the Wag. Gives me peace of mind to see that shiny new metal in there, knowing the job was done right and probably won't have to be done again for another ten years.
