A little reminder of who I am. My name is Jamie Phillips and I live in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. (a Chicago Suburb) I have a '73 J-4600 truck, 360 2bbl, TH400, Quadra Trac, Dana 44-front, Dana 60 Semi Floater- Rear. With work, my house and the Army Reserves I'm not able to devote much time to work on my truck. My biggest problem so far has been the brake system. It uses 2" x 12" on 5 lug drums on all four wheels and the parts are not made any more. Anyway, I have scrounged enough parts for the rear axle but the front gave me problems. The previous owner apparently realized the problem with getting parts (he never mentioned this to me when selling the vehicle) and attampted to convert one side to a different system. I believe it was the more common Jeep 2" x 11" drum. Well I scratched my head for a long time trying to decide how to convert the front axle to the same system on both wheels (one that I could get parts for). Unfortunately the axle was a closed knuckle axle so doing the knuckle out conversion wasn't possible. So I finally broke down and decided to do what a number of people here on the list had already recommended, an axle swap. After talking to a number of people I determined that an axle from a late 70's Blazer would be a good option. The differential was on the passenger side and the width was maybe an inch more. I got intouch with a guy in the area that has been doing axle work (especially with Dana's) for a number of year out of his house. I talked to him for awhile and deterimined that he had the right tools and experience I lacked to do my axle work. So he went out and found a '78 Blazer Dana 44 front axle for me, swapped the 4.10 gears from my axle into the Blazer axle (correctly), replaced all the bearings and seals and welded new pads on the axle. He also got '79 Bronco "knuckles out" so that I could keep my 5-lug wheel pattern. With the axle out, I decided to do fix some leaks under the truck. I pulled the oil pan off (real easy without the axle there) to replace the gasket. That was when I noticed that the connecting rods and caps had the cylinder number stamped on them. At first I assumed this ment that previous work had been done on the engine. Then I looked through my TSM and it indicated it came from the factory this way. Is this done on most engines? Anyway, I have to repair some transmission cooler line leaks then put the axle in. Hopefully I wont have to many problems with the steering linkage. I also already have an adjustable break proportioning valve to adjust the hybrid break system. Then there is the exhaust problem..... That means I have the Deck, speakers, changer and the rear speakers. After I get the unit setup I'll decide if I need the wired remote as well. I'm thinking the wireless remote attached to the wheel via velcro will work ok... been looking for pictures of the xj dash to see where I could mount the wired remote... it's only $34... Got the carpet samples the other day. thinking gray to match the seats and floor mats and the dark driftwood poly... guess I'll need to see a sample sprayed on the J10 before finalizing... I'm tired of the orangeish brown... Last I heard Curtis got his hands on a forklift and was going to commence dismembering SuperDawg... :) We still need to fabricate the adapter, otherwise we have everything except the paint and carpet... I've seen what Curtis did to the 77 Wagoneer. Methodical, precise and clean... I'm very happy to have things working out this way. :) The plan is to have it all done by Labor Day... I hope so... :) But if not, well, I know it's being done correctly. And I'm not without wheels... the '87 is doing ok, and of course since the brakes are still messed up on the WJ I'm driving it... I know, I know, it's rough, but I'm dealing with the "pain"... I mean that power sunroof, heated leather seats and sound system are such a "pain". :) (Did you know that when I crank up some songs on that thing that the outside mirrors vibrate? sheesh... ;) I'm still packing and shipping stuff out of the carport making room for SuperDawg... The mail room at work allows us to ship stuff there and we just pay them... saving me a lot of time, but my friends in the mail room are commenting that when I bring in the tires they're calling in sick... (I wandered in Friday with the '78 Grille... :) Tomorrow I get to bring the front end of a '96 XJ in ship... rofl... BTW, I'm thinking of parting with my unopened, new, still in the plastic wrap Revell Jeep Honcho model. I'm not sure what they're going for on ebay now... but if there is any interest I'll put it up on ebay... I'm not a model builder... I bought it when I had a Honcho... and as a collector item. Once I get my scanner functioning again I'm going to scan my original Jeep literature that I'd bought for my book and start selling it as well... I spent way too much money on this stuff. Hopefully it's appreciated in value. It feels good to purge.... I don't need all this stuff... been saving it for the ultimate FSJ... I've finally got my FSJ design together and in process. It took 14 Full Size Jeeps to get the mix correct. Years of parts gathering and collecting. But I finally hit upon the right formula, for me... SuperDawg won't be a heavy hauler, won't fry the tires, won't dust off 5.0 mustangs, and won't be an econocar... but he'll be somewhere in the middle with decent capabilities in all departments with a long-lived driveline. If I get 16 mpg around town I will be satisfied. Still haven't decided whether to dump the WJ for another XJ or not. Got it on autotrader.com for $25,000 basic ad... book value ranges from the dealer trade-in offer of 22 to the full retail of 28. The problem is this thing has everything I want in a Jeep. The only thing I don't want is the V8, but this 4.7L is awesome. 18.3 mpg at 70mph!!! Old Blue only did 12.75 as his best on the highway... and Old Blue would have seen nothing but the taillights of this WJ, even off-road. The WJ is so much more advanced and better than Old Blue was... the only thing lacking is that "panoscopic" vision. And I'm getting used to it. I really think the WJ's are in the same league as the original Wagoneers were when they came out. The WJ is better in many ways than an XJ, except for visibility and "nimbleness". Of course an SJ is at the same disadvantage with the XJ when it comes to "nimbleness". The SJ and WJ behave in similar ways off-road and for that matter on road. The WJ is a bit more refined than the best of the SJs. I think as the WJs get older and drop in price and FSJ owners begin to think about them that they will like them. The struggle continues on whether to replace the WJ with an XJ... but there isn't any question at all concerning SuperDawg. :) The J10 stepside is the PERFECT FSJ for me. The only thing that would make it better was if it was a supercab on the same chassis... ;) (who needs bed space any way, that's what my utility trailer is for... ;) sorry for going long... btw, Curtis, my son is trading me one of those Gel Cell batteries for my flowmaster... he's going to use it on the Fairlane... this is a good development and beats the open pipe he has been running... :) Since my flowmaster is attached to the bad high flow cat just bring the whole system or cut off the flowmaster. Or I'll grab it if I get down there before you get up here. :) I guess I'll need to get a new muffler for SuperDawg, recommendations? The two chamber flowmaster I had on the little wag was bit loud... and that stock muffler from the '96 is too restrictive... 3 chamber flowmaster then? What's the OD of the pipe behind the Cat? If I have time I'll get one before we get together.... The parts pile grows here.... :) john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1393 **************************
