Tucked away in the south east corner right down by the Canada- U.S. border, on the far outskirts of the Fraser River delta, close to the ferry terminal where the ferries depart for Vancouver Island, is a gem of a naturalists delight called the Reifel Wildlife Sanctuary. It is on one of the small islands created over thousands of years by the muddy Fraser River as it deposits it's sediment brought down from plateaus and mountains hundreds of miles away. Where the tidal flats meet the marshes is a 648 hectare island that is part of a 6 kilometre wide zone of tidal flats that see 260 species of birds during the course of a year. This island is one of the main rest stops for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds on the Western Flyway. Significant numbers of ducks, geese, loons, grebes, herons and cormorants, to name a few, all call this home at one time or another. The bird count swells in the winter when many birds will winter over in the tidal areas and on the farmers fields. The National Wildlife Society works in conjunction with the local farmers to help supply food for the birds. Instead of tilling under the waste potatoes, cereal crops, and pasture fields, they allow the waste to stay on the fields as food for the birds. During the winter the Sanctuary really puts on a show for the eyes and ears. Over 25,000 Lesser Snow Geese will winter here, with some moving to Puget Sound for a month or two, only to return in late winter to fatten up for the return trip to Wrangell Island, the home of their summer grounds. There are too many birds to mention them all here, but for a quick photographic tour have a look at my web page on Photopoint.com under the album titled "Bird Refuge" http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=1428517 For more on the refuge itself have a look at this link http://www.pyr.ec.gc.ca/wildlife/habitat/mbs-george_e.htm If you are here during early spring or late fall when the flyways are busy, it's definitly worth a visit. For the little kids the local ducks and Canada Geese all know that the little brown paper bags that people carry around are full of bird seed and they are not shy about crowding around your feet to be fed. Do you think that the 258 six would be a worthy option if I install the Mopar fuel injection kit? Dave yes, it would be and it would solve the problem of mating a different transmission. The aisin-warner transmission is excellent, but unless you go with an XJ xfr case with the Slip Yoke you'll have to make a custom adapter. The Mopar kit is expensive and will interfere with the brake booster, forcing you to do a body lift (terrible, huh? ;) , hydraboost or a smaller brake booster. a friend down in California did it and loves it.
