And we can't find my Babi's Czech-English dictionary... :( In reality I would be skeptical about what the post-communist Czech's could produce... Ever seen a Skoda? I will second Pat's comments on splitfires. Those plugs are cheaply made, looks like someone smacked the ends of those things by hand with an old hammer. gimmicks. like slick50, prolube and other snake oil stuff. Just pick one up and look at the quality and workmanship... it's a crude piece of metal. The bosch +4's at least look like they're precision pieces! I've tried the Bosch +4, didn't have any trouble with them at all... at least not that I can recall... in fact I think they're still in the long gone little wagoneer... I installed 'em over three years ago, connected them with Jacobs Wires (I still think jacobs wires are the BEST, don't want their ignition modules or coils though) and they stayed in there... nary a problem... ran great. My mechanic friend seems to like NGKs. I have no idea what my WJ has, haven't found the plugs yet, they live under separate coils! Even the injectors go directly into the heads. The WJ is today what the SJ was in it's day. The more I learn about the WJ the more impressed I am... :) I'll be keeping my eyes opened for one of these totalled out... the 4.7L, 45RE (or is it F?) and the NV247 would be a nice transplant for a nice late model fully loaded GW. :) john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 21:43:58 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: the new stuff... I've been reading the service manual on the '99 WJ... it's got more acronyms than the military: SKIM - Smart Key Immobilizer Module PCM - Powertrain Control Module BCM - Body Control Module EMIC - Electro-Mechanical Instrument Cluster. PCI - Programable Communications Interface VFD - Vacuum Fluorescent Display (odometer) RKE - Remote Keyless Entry VTSS - Vehicle Theft Security System DDM - Driver Door Module EVIC - Electronic Vehicle Information Center PDM - Passenger Door Module and that's just from the first section... ;) I started reading about the gerotor technology that is supposed to be coming out in other configurations. It's really pretty straightforward. Correct me if I'm misreading this, but it works something like this: there is a pump setup, one part of it lives on one side of the axle (or xfr case) the other part on the other side, if there is a big difference in speed between the two of them pressure is created that forces the clutch pack together and voila, you've got a "locker" and forward, or reverse motion. In the comparison tests I read when the WJ first came out there were only three vehicles that could move with only one wheel having traction: the hummer, the ML series and the WJ. I read another report where one of the off road rags (four wheeler???) did a test with those rigs on an INCLINE. The wj was the only one that went up it with only one tire. Some of the technology in the WJ is pretty impressive. I'm thinking that in a few years this driveline will be affordable for transplant into Grand Wagoneers or even XJs. Even the 4.0L in the '99 WJ is different than the earlier XJs... it doesn't have spark plug wires!!! They have coils on a bar and fire two cylinders at once. I wonder if the 2001 XJ has that setup too? Hey you up in Iceland, or is it Greenland??? with the new XJ, how is your rig setup? :) ON the rear axles, they show two in the Service manual: 198 RBI - rear beam-design Iron axle housing, has both trac-lok and vari-lok and the 226 RBA - rear beam-design aluminum axle housing that has an aluminum center casting with axle shaft tubes extending from either side. The tubes are pressed into the diff. housing to form a one-piece axle housing. the front axle is a 186 FBI - front beam iron... I don't know how to tell which one is used as both have the Vari-lok option which is used for Quadradrive... Hope you don't mind my sharing this stuff... I figure these parts will end up in the wrecking yards and might come in handy for our older rigs... later, john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 21:52:49 +0000 From: Pat Hines Subject: fsj: Chevy to Jeep torqueflite adapter http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=594142319 Not my auction. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 11:28:21 -0400 From: mpolkkidodge-at-netscape.net Subject: fsj: Same YJ, Two Different States, Two Different Auctions?????? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=594159614 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=594170224 __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Ever seen a Skoda? Nope. I know what you mean tho. Yet I have found some interesting things in the world of firearms (ignore this message if you think I'm a gun nut already). My CZ-75B is a fine firearm, reliable, accurate, from a design with a long history of gov't and police service, and fairly refined. And $100-200 less than the competition. Russian-made Makarov pistols are also highly reliable, simple, tough, if a bit crudely finished. Likewise for my Hungarian FEG PA-63 (750+ round, very few jams and only when very dirty). Not pretty or ultra precise, but simple, tough, functional. I don't know if tolerances and quality control are up to snuf in all the companies, but some seem to have found ways of producing pretty excellent products, actually. I wouldn't be surprised if the Brisk plugs are pretty good quality. Hard to tell if it is gimick and hype or truth. There are probably no regulations against false advertising in Czech Republic. :) > I will second Pat's comments on splitfires. I'll take a look. I've had good luck with Bosch Platinums (the single electrode kind) and regular untreated motor oil. I think I'll stick to it. > I've tried the Bosch +4, didn't have any trouble with them > at all... at least not that I can recall...
