I've done this before and gotten the trailer stuck over the side of the hill and needed to extract with another Jeep. Also gotten stuck in the creek before, but after a while you learn where not to turn around... the pictures don't tell the whole story of the terrain... One time the trailer got away from me and went over the hill... then I used an FSJ to hook up to the trailer, but couldn't extract it... so I hooked up an XJ to the front of the SJ and was able to get it out. Thankfully I didn't need to use the WJ to extract the XJ. This little '87 has 269,400 miles on it and I just replaced the track bar this morning, had to test it out... notice the last few pictures with how far the trailer is over the edge... the last picture shows the damage... need to rewire the trailer anyway... they just don't make old japanese pickup beds like they used to... ;) the taillights just don't hold up to clearing blackberries... http://www.wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/87-cherokee-laredo/Sep15-2001-BLACKBERRIES/ hope all is well where you're at... it's been a rough week for America. john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2001 08:01:04 -0700 From: "allyoop" Subject: fsj: Brake drum restoration I pulled the front drums (2" x 12") from my '73 J4600 yesterday and discovered one is rivet scored. Since these are obsolete and no longer available, I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the drum surface can be built up by metal flame spraying, then machined back to spec. (In metal spraying metal is heated in an arc or acetylene flame and the molten metal sprayed on the receiving surface.) A guy on one of the motorcycle lists said it could be done, but hadn't done it himself. I know bearing journals are sometimes restored by metal spraying, but brake drums are much lighter in mass. Anybody have info on this process, or know if it's used for brake drums? Anyone know a supplier who's willing to do small lots like this? Or even easier, anybody have a spare useable five-hole 12x2 drum? I would have concerns that the metal spray would not penetrate well to the cast surface of the brake drum, but you might be able to hard surface it with a mild steel alloy and then machine it down to spec.
