I've had this Jeep for almost three years and I haven't had to do anything more drastic to it than change the alternator, so I ought to be thrilled, but this thing doesn't like me doing any form of maintenance on it. I've been having "power accessory" problems. The interior lights don't come on when opening some doors, some windows roll up slow, some power door locks won't unlock, the back window doesn't want to work... So after neglecting these items as long as I could, I finally pulled all of my door panels off, and got everything running beautifully. Locks, lights, windows, all perfect. I got into the tailgate & yanked the safety switch which keeps you from rolling up the window when the gate is down, greased everything, put new seals in/outside the glass & the window worked beautifully. I marched in and proudly told the wife that everything was taken care of. Two days later I went to dinner in it, & when I opened the driver's door, the interior light didn't come on. Another door suddenly decided that it didn't need to latch fully when I closed it. It just popped into that "half closed" neverland, until I finally jammed it shut enough for it to stay. When I came back to the truck, the power lock on my wife's side wouldn't open, and the door that I couldn't close, wouldn't open. I had to forcibly yank the door open. The lock appears to be sticking somehow. Then, because I wasn't aggravated enough, when I stopped at WalMart on the way home, the window wouldn't go back up. It stops about six inches up, and waits for me to bang on the gate until it finally decides to go up the rest of the way. This stupid window went up and down at least a dozen times, perfectly while I was working on it. Any ideas why it is doing this to aggravate me? Just so I couldn't claim any form of victory, one of my rear windows stopped moving entirely. The motor doesn't even run, so it must be an electrical problem. Looking up from under the jeep ('82 FSJ Cherokee Laredo), starter out, directly above starter mount bolt, right beside the front right (passenger side) corner of the oil pan is a 3/4" - 1" hole that looks like it goes into the block. What is this? From it's position, it looks like it would let splashing oil out. Thanks. Let me relate to you MY story of 4-year FSJ ownership. Maybe it'll help you feel a little more thankful. :) Purchased 86 GW, 86,000 miles, alternator dies on first trip fishing, $200 to repair, last repair I had done by shop. The engine has always sucked in this vehicle. Rear main and other oil leaks developed, later coolant from the block, then tranny from the pan gasket. Tried repairing some of these a few times, to no avail. Carb was hosed with bad power valve, shot accel pump, etc, so I rebuilt it, ran better but still lacked power. Spent a lot of time over years trying to improve the power including a week of swapping the timing chain also to no avail which then resulted in another oil leak after 10k miles. Right after the timing chain, the new distributor I put in went bad and I had intermittent stalling problems for six months while I tracked down the problem. When I did the lift kit I ruined both front hard brake lines and had to replace them completely and later when I was replacing the calipers to cure the terrible brakes this truck was always plagued with, I snapped off a fitting on the $35 brake line that I had to spend $70 (on a kit) to replace. But that's ok, because after new lines, braided hose, calipers, and master cylinder, the truck stops pretty well. Steering was practically dangerous and when I went in for an alignment (one of the few things I don't do myself) the shop insisted on new ball joints and drag link end and new axle ujoint all of which ran me $600 but that's fine because the truck steers very precisely now. When I couldn't take the weak, horribly pinging (with 91 octane and retarded timing) motor anymore, which incidentally barely passed emissions until I ran lean jets, I swapped in a known running one, but it leaked worse than the original tho it had more power. I also swapped in a used tranny because the original was starting to get real soft despite fluid changes and band adjustments. The swap of transfer case, tranny, and engine took about 4 months of here-and-there hours on evenings and weekends plus most of my 4th of July weekend, 2000. When done, as I said, the engine leaked, the tranny is now slipping in drive and the tcase is dripping ATF at a good clip. A year later I gave up and I had a motor rebuilt, the first money I'd spent on a shop, cost a fortune, put it in, and there was an intake manifold leak, took it back, got a new manifold, installed it, and there is still problems with the way the motor runs, probably still a leak. I have left it alone for more than a month mostly out of defeat and aggrivation. So this fine vehicle I have bolted lots of off-road accessories to still sits unusable in my driveway. You can mentally take an inventory of all that was (and is) wrong with this vehicle. I named it "Troubled Child" for a very, very good set of reasons. By contrast, I have an 85 GW I bought for half the price of the 86 which to this day runs like a top even tho it had almost twice the miles and it now has 142k on the clock. The p/s pump finally started leaking too much to bear, and it does have one other leak, but by and large the vehicle has been incredibly reliable for the last 20k miles. Except the driver rear window won't go up, the rear window fails frequently due to bad electrical connections that I have yet to fix, and the dome light keeps failing to operate, the first time due to what must have been a severe short that melted wires. I haven't gotten around to diagnosing it this time around. YET... I would GLADLY take the electrical problems over the mechanical ones ANY day of the week cuz I am REALLY sick of spending months of spare time digging into the guts of the engine compartment on a frequent basis, pulling motors, trannies, etc in hopes that SOME day maybe this damned truck will actually be capable of driving down the road without some significant problem. So far this troublesome vehicle has cost me two attempts at Holy Cross and the bulk of two entire four wheeling seasons because either the other truck wasn't up to snuff, or I was busy turning a wrench. I could hire the work done, but can you imagine how much money it would've cost for the labor I've put into this truck already? I can. :) Neither vehicle's passenger door lock unlocks the door. So... hope that puts things into perspective for ya. :) As for your problems, try a bad electrical connector that hooks up the rear window motor, that is what is wrong with mine and I also bypassed the safety switch. For the window motor, if you've greased 'em all, then consider pulling them apart and cleaning them up. If you can figure out how to re-wrap them, maybe that'd work. Jim Blair has talked about rebuilding his own alternators. I'm sure a window motor is the same. For door locks I am going to use All Electronic's $5 surplus door lock actuators combined with redesigned electrical wiring-- if I don't find bad switches, bad grounding or other connection problems first. Well, once again an FSJ has sacrificed itself to protect the occupants. Leslie (Wife) and Ashleigh (Daughter) got in the middle of a multi-car accident today. Apparently a Dodge Minivan driver did not see that everyone was stopped and slammed into the back of a late model GMC Jimmy (2000 or 2001), which in turn slammed into the back of Eeyore, pushing Eeyore into a Mercury Sable. One of those nasty chain reaction accidents. Leslie and Ashleigh were released from the Hospital with only minor injuries (slight whiplash and a few bruises). Eeyore was the only vehicle able to leave the scene under it's own power, the Minivan was flat to the base of the windshield with both doors popped out, the GMC Jimmy was horribly crunched in the rear with damage reaching to the front of the back doors, and was also unrecognizable from the front with damage reaching the back of the front doors, the Sable's trunk was 1/2 of it's original depth thanks to the brush guard on Eeyore. Now for the damage to Eeyore: Rear bumper on drivers side crushed into the quarter panel, and generally tweaked all the way across, tailgate dented on left lower corner. Front brush guard bent about 5 degrees, tow bar mounts are bent, and the front bumper is generally tweaked all the way across. Initially I thought that was about it for damage, but upon close inspection I discovered more. The entire rear section (from the back of the rear doors back) is slightly tweaked to the drivers side causing interference between the rear drivers side door and the center pillar, and causing an excessive gap between the rear passenger door and the quarter panel. The roof rack has popped the front well nuts out of the roof on the drivers side. The left rear of the GW appears to be pushed down in the back and bowed up in the middle. Park on the automatic transmission is no longer available (it has to be started in Neutral), the brake pedal is moved about an inch to the left and the accelerator pedal is about 1/2" away from the brake pedal. The drivers seat back is bent rearwards about 10 degrees. Both rear quarter panels are bowed out. The radio was forced about 5" out of the dash, the ash tray was forced open fully, and the little black box behind the dash is now dangling near the floor by it's cable. Unfortunately, the steering and braking ability of the GW has also been effected slightly, and it feels like it's not tracking straight anymore either. Unfortunately, the glaringly obvious damage does not look really bad so I am assuming that I will be in for a fight with the insurance company.
