Darn ! ;) >mike sometimes life can be so very rough... :) I mean after all it's a challenge driving it on those cold mornings, trying to decide if I should use the high or low settings on the seat heater, or whether I should heat the exterior mirrors... and then the agony of deciding whether to listen to CD, cassette or one of the 20 fm or 10 am settings... it's rough... The hardest part is holding onto the only key we have for it... my wife has it right now, and by golly, the Jeep ain't in sight... it's 50 miles away :) I sat in one of those butt ugly KJs last night... better visibility than the WJ, the one I was in had ALL the goodies that the WJ has... the sales guy was saying it was really quiet... I may go and test it out. I think I could swap straight across and get a 0% 3 year financing arrangement, didn't run the numbers yet, need to contact the sales guy. It's unlikely that the blood-sucking sales manager will do a straight value for value deal, I think it's against their religion. They'd have to give me about $3k discount on the KJ and like actually give me listed trade-in for my WJ. The deal doesn't work on the XJs as they're no longer available, but I'm trying to work a similar deal on one of them, interest is about 4.9% there as it's used. I have to remind myself the objective is to have NO payment. If they do it I might do it. It puts me in a new Jeep with a warranty and no interest payments! Of course the payment might be higher... :( Driving the WJ is an experience you all must try. It is the future FSJ. If they applied this technology to an SJ it would be awesome. I'd want the driveline, dash setup, seats and the tailgate setup. But from the FSJ I'd want the Panascopic vision and body on frame configuration, but that might ruin it... tough decision on that... One of the guys at work followed me through the hilly curves heading into work yesterday... I didn't push the Jeep, took it easy, only did about 50, I watched his toyota pickup come through the last curve with massive body roll, taking two lanes... the Jeep didn't have any body roll and had lots leftover... so a frame might increase the weight and the center of gravity... hard to say. That and the WJ only weighs around 4,000 lbs or so... haven't put it on the scales yet. I miss the visibility the most in the WJ. Low speed turning and parking is cumbersome too, they need to turn up the powersteering pump a bit. :) Of course the FSJ's had so much power steering you had no feel at all... but I like it that way. You can whip them around like they're on a sea of marbles. We'll see what happens. Had three folks asking what I'd take for the WJ after the auction closed. I'm in no hurry. I ain't going backwards on the rig that's for certain. :) later, john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 11:26:55 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: worth $50??? this is pretty interesting, might be worth collecting, however I don't know if it's worth it... opens at $44. In fact, I remember seeing one specifically for the 232. http://www.redlineweber.com/HTML/products.htm here, this looks close: not sure if this 232 is the same as the one from the Kaiser Jeeps or not.. AMC had a 232 they used on the CJs in the early '70s. I'm not sure if it's the same as the High Torque from the '60s, although I can't imagine that the carb would be that hard to mount even if the motor was different, you may have to create an adaptor. http://www.thinkjeep.com/manufacturers/weber/ 72-78 Jeep 6Cyl. 232 cid. engine w/carter YF/YFA series one barrel carb. 32/36 DGEV carb adaptor, linkage and air filter. Wrong. Mobil one is synthesized hydrocarbon. They reformulate petroleum oil. I'm sure the other big oil companies do something similar. And there are synthetic blends that incorporate petroleum base to lower the cost. But Amsoil and Redline are true synthetics, the exact formula for either one is not made public, but they are usually a blend of polyol esthers and dibasic acid esthers (I hope I spelled that first word right or Dan will give me a lesson in Chemistry... ;). Depending on the formulation this synthetic oil may be completely created from organic material like corn or soybeans. I've got an article from the '70's that makes it clear about the differences, true synthetics are just that, synthetic. The Germans figured out how to make synthetic oil from coal during WWII to deal with the cold of the russian front. Like I said, Amsoil is not willing to divulge their complete formula so if they do use petroleum oil in it it's still a completely different formulation than Mobil one. I could dig through some old articles I gathered years ago from technical journals and see the various formulations that were examined in some old SAE journals. (when I worked at Boeing I had access to one of the finest technical libraries in the world!!! ) >Dan Starc would love to tell you all about it. :o) I'll try to make it a topic of our next lunchtime get together. We were quite distracted the last few meetings by Earthquakes and most recently the WTC tragedy. :( We were about ready to head down to the recruiter's office... >If you feel funny about spending $$ on synthetic, use Kendall instead. You >pay just a LITTLE bit more than regular petrol oil, but it's probably the >best you can get without going synthetic. Phil I have to agree with Phil on this one. A good mechanic friend recommends it. I've used it before too. It is excellent oil. Jim Startup in Everett would have it too. It costs more... I haven't priced it lately, what's it going for Phil? The last time I bought some it was about $1.75 a quart, regular oil was around $.59 a quart at the time... Castrol was around .99... it's been a few years... I've been using Amsoil and it's prices have stayed pretty flat since 1983. It was around $5 a quart then, and it's around $5 a quart now... :) Amsoil has some synthethic blends for only $4.15 a quart. The 20w50 racing oil I use is about $6.20 a quart, but it's only good for one year or 25,000 miles... unless I do oil analysis... Once one of my rigs gets over about 150,000 miles on it I just change the filter once a year instead of every six months and top it off... The little wag had 230,000 miles when it was totalled... not sure how many miles the oil had because I'd fixed the rear main seal about 9 months before... but I digress... ;) john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 00:22:28 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: price on my '99 Wj I've been researching the value on my '99 GC ltd. Might be able to work a trade-in deal on a 2001 XJ or a 2002 KJ. The only problem with that is I still have a payment, but then I'd have a lesser Jeep. Knowing how dealers work I'd rather try my luck selling my rig on my own. Then I could go shopping for a nice '95 and up XJ. Or take the cash and go to the dealer and talk them down on their price on the used 2001 XJ or work a deal on the KJ if I like them after driving one... (they are ugly, but some of the features inside are similar to the WJ, but with better visibility!) I've figured that trying to sell it for trade-in value is probably the best way of going considering market variations. I'm asking $22,125 (halfway between NADA and Kelley's trade-in values).
