This is with my '83 Wagoneer. The power is there, but the window motor isn't doing anything. Is it possible to switch to a manual crank, rather than the electric motor to operate the window? If so, where should I look for a manual crank, and how much should I expect to pay for one? If not, where should I look for a replacement motor, and how much should that cost? Then of course, there is the replacement procedure itself, which, with the window stuck in the up position looks somewhat challenging. Any advice that would make the job easier would be appreciated. Other car trouble (I've written to the list about this one before - thanks for putting up with it) The car is an '86 Nissan stanza. It has 2 coils and 2 plugs per cylinder. It has fuel injection. The problem is twofold. First it misfires. On start up it is fine. After about five minutes (after it warms up) it starts to misfire, but not consistently. It will give a sputter every 5 to 10 seconds at idle. At low r's with a load it sputters considerably. At higher r's it seems to be fine (or I'm just not noticing the misfire - not sure). The other problem which may be related, or not, is a low voltage reading on the dash indicator. It is showing a charging range of between 8 and 11 volts. When I check the alternator, battery, etc., with a multi-tester it shows it is actually charging at slightly over 14. I keep getting conflicting thoughts, and advice, about whether it is fuel or spark related. The plugs, wires, cap and rotor are new (replaced while trying to fix the problem). The fuel filter is semi-new (replaced about 6 months ago). I have also replaced a good number of vacuum hoses (thinking for sure that would fix the problem). I'm stumped on this one. It makes the car really irritating to drive, so it has been sitting for a while, with my jeep getting considerably more use. Of course I'm plowing through the gas now too with that good ol' 360 :o) - -Brett ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 06:08:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: tailgate window and other car trouble A: Try taking the cover off the inside of the gate and putting power AND ground directly to the motor with jumper cables (it unplugs below the glass) If it still doesn't go, then you will have to undo the motor case and turn the armature by hand so you can undo the 6 screws holding it in, and lower everything enough to get the clips off the tracks and slide the glass down to open. I'll reply about the Nissan offlist. PS: The '83 GW uses switchable wires, but some early ones (pre '78?) were ground to the case and the wires were for power only. If I saw a working one for $200, I might have to get it -- it'd be really tempting to have for helping people move around town, and that'd be about the cost of a trailer (which I have anyway, but it's not covered). And, of course, the comment about the "atomic heater". Also sounds like it'd be fun to stick a couch (love seat?) and speakers in the back of to turn into a "unique" cruiser. I'll put the whole bit here: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1975 AMC DJ-5F (Postal Jeep) - Reviewed by Tom Z out of Illinois. Needed tune-up, new ignition parts and carb/choke adj when I first got it. Also, steering was so worn, it had 8 inches of play in the wheel, and my buddy Mike almost got killed driving it home on the tollway. Subsequently adjusted down to more reasonable 2" of play. Solid runner, atomic heater! Acceleration : Dumbfoundingly fast to 45-50mph. Faster than my Eagle Talon, a BMW 318, and my buddy's 86 Olds Cutlass w/V8. It's all in the gearing, and after all it's just an aluminum box Handling : Poor, but very predictable. Lots of body lean. Leaning out the right-side door during cornering makes marked difference for the better. Kind of fun, if your used to it. Manual steering, and VERY tight turning radius: 12-15'. Also the most confidence inspiring rear-drive winter vehicle I've driven, bar none. Braking : Adequate. No power brakes, and drums all around - no discs here. Very responsive though, and easy to modulate. Never locked 'em up. Comfort : Not for long trips. Not for high speed(50+mph) Seats are suitable for buzzing around town. Low lift in height for the floor at the rear, side-hinged cargo door makes it ideal as a grocery getter. Drawbacks : Compliant, long travel suspension and high gearing make it unsuitable for high-speed use. But this is THE perfect city car. Engine is the tough Jeep 232, Torqueflite tranny is bulletproof and truly overkill. Slide-back doors are a blast on warm days. Very reliable, and easy to maintain. Best damn $200 I ever spent, and I'll buy another one in an instant. Tom Z's Rating : 4.5 Adam's Comment : You can't get much for 200 bucks. This, though, sounds like a fun toy. Well, the 1979 Wag engine is complete and installed. It runs pretty well...BUT...there is one small glitch...sometimes it won't shut off with the key. I had to reroute an alternator wire that was somehow cut in the process of engine removal/reinstallation. I couldn't find where it was originally...SO...I figured out that it was the field excite wire and wired it to the START side of the solenoid. Now, I think it is allowing the alternator to feed back through the ignition coil somehow. If anyone knows where to put that wire, please let me know so that I don't end up with worse troubles than I started with. Thanks loads....
