It was recently rebuilt, so it should be okay with the stock 4.0L and no load (the 2.72 gears and 33.5" tires are another story though! LOL!) This is just so I can testfire the injection system and wring the bugs out before swapping in my 4 speed auto, and then my 4.6L and finally the LPG by -at- January so I can break it in well before Ouray. (I'll test try my 3.31 gears with a NT rear axle first, and if they aren't low enough I only have to swap 3 diffs instead of 4.) I found a '75 pickup with 3.54 gears for $600 I considered swapping into mine, but the $$ are low unless I blow the Christmas money! From: Landon Tesar Good deal, Jim! It'll be great to have Blackie on the road....take it easy on that 5spd.... - - - Landon From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Today my son and I yanked the 4.0L and 5 speed out of the '87 Cherokee and shoehorned it into Black Jack. I'll have to lift it again to do some modifications, as I have to swap motor mounts, and remove the Power brake booster. It's probably a single diaphragm style, but it's on my for sale list now (once I get time to pull it) as I am swapping in Chev Hydro-boost setup. Haven't had time to check it out yet because it was after dark, but the motor looked like it's sitting level (I considered using the XJ motor mounts) Pics will be posted when I get time. Now it's time for bed! ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 22:31:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Turbo Diesel engine From: john Gejkf4cnm1-at-aol.com wrote: Hi! John, >>I live an hour north of Atlanta, Ga. off of I-75. I drive about 2 hrs. each day going to k and coming home. The best gas mileage I have been able to achieve is 17 mpg. My Jeep is a 1991 XJ with a 4.0 L engine with command -track 4 wheel drive. I use Pennzoil full synthetic oil. My question is how can I improve my gas mileage on my Jeep. I would love to see 21 mpg. A: See if you can find someone that carries CD2 Maximum Mileage fuel system cleaner. It's the best I've found so far. It made my '86 Comanche go from 14 mpg to -at-28 hwy (2.5L 4 cyl with TBI) >>I am planning to restore a 1975 J-10 long bed Jeep pickup with the 258 engine and a total of 57,000 miles on it. I need a very good exhaust manifold. Where can I purchase one at a good price? Also where would I find some good parts for this J-10? John wrote: >258 parts are plentiful... check with some of the AMC and AMX folks as well as the bobtail owners. :) A: I would upgrade to TBI (Holley makes a kit) or at least get a Carter 2 bbl BBD (non-computer) and '81 up better flowing intake and exhaust (I have an '83 exhaust but John got the intake) I got 20 mpg from my '83 Cherokee with 258 (actually a 282 stroker) and BBD carb. (stock tires and 999 autotrans with lockup) It was Comandtrac too (Which I prefer. Even my stroker 4.6L '84 J10 is getting a NP208 till I can afford a Goliath!) >Would you mind if I can ask you questions as I under take this rebuild project? I have many questions to ask. What do I need to do to convert it to a J-20 from a J-10? Why does this Jeep sound so noisy at 65 and 70 mph? etc. A: Springs and axles are most of the conversion (My J10 will be near J20 weight capable with lighter duty axles by increasing the wheel stud size and going to 16" HD tires) What gear ratio do you have? My truck is loud -at-75 mph, but I have 2.72 gears (soon to be 3.31 or lower with the Overdrive auto trans I'm putting in along with Propane EFI) ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 20:18:03 -0400 From: mpolkkidodge-at-netscape.net Subject: fsj: Nice J Truck Book On Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=596812391 __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Need to save my vacation, more teaching jobs like this coming... hawaii next... (not driving to that one... ;) the '99 WJ was getting around 18 on the twisty windy hilly 101 up the coast... 19 on I-5... over 34 tanks it's averaging over 16 mpg... I hope my FSJ with the XJ driveline will do at least that well. :) Considering vehicles... saw a lot of nice mercedes diesels... asked the wife what was a better road car, the grand cherokee or the 300SD. She asked if I was kidding. I said the benz got better mileage and handled better... she said it was noisey and uncomfortable. The XJ wouldn't have handled all the stuff we packed down and would have gotten about the same mileage. Of course an FSJ would have carried it all, cruised nicely, but bankrupted us in fuel costs... :) Looks like the WJ wins the contest and gets to stick around. The odometer rolls to 40,000 in the next few days! Plans are to replace the steering pump, serpentine belt and idler pulleys. Then I'm going to switch the trans/xfr case over to amsoil and redo the wheel bearings and u-joints... and if I can find the spark plugs, going to change them too... ;) I'm thinking that we should call this Jeep Voyager after the star trek series... it's sleek and modern and will be commanded by a woman... (soon as SuperDawg returns to service with his XJ driveline. :) gotta go, more driving tomorrow... BTW, does anyone know if there is an Inn-Out hamburger place here in Portland, OR? How about a Krispy Kreme donut place? Email me off list, will stay on line until we check out around 9 or 10am. Also, any suggestions on an affordable USB CDwriter? thanx, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com via PINE on Linux ** (plain text please!) ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ...and remember, leaving life without Jesus just isn't recommended... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1483 **************************
