I know that I seem to forget to type in the list address about 50% of the time. The XJ list at digest.net has the reply to address set to the list. The NP229 uses a similar floor mounted shifter that operates 2wd/4wd High and 4wd low. It does not have a 4wd high lockup. It also uses an underdash mounted system that operates TWO vacuum motors. One vacuum motor engages a shift fork in the front axle. This one is unnecessary if you have the NP219 now. On later models Jeep left the front driveshaft connected to the front axle. So you needn't worry about that. Even if you get all the components for the NP229 (the under dash switch and vacuum systems) I would NOT recommend installing the axle disconnect system. Nor would I recommend installing hubs. The risk to the viscous coupler is too great. The other vacuum motor is on the NP229 itself and engages the 4wd part. This is where you'll need to be creative. You have a couple of options, actually three. 1) get a vacuum switch of some kind and use it to control vacuum to the shift motor on the side of the xfr case. 2) get the factory setup and use it, capping off the vacuum controls for the front axle, or 3) figure out a way of replacing the vacuum motor with a mechanical lever and possibly a cable setup. I'm sure something could be setup to operate it. I'm trying to scan in a diagram from the factory manual, but this stupid microsoft operating system is having troubles, need to reboot... I'll put up on my server... I may end up taking a digital picture of it... anyway, it'll be up at: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/TECH/TRANSFER-CASES/NP229/NP229-controls.jpg http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/TECH/TRANSFER-CASES/NP229/ argghh... It's already on my server... I did notice in the manual that the vacuum motor on the transfer case controls a rod. So you could create another lever setup or a cable control to activate 4wd mode. That way you wouldn't have to deal with the vacuum issues. AS far as my stupid pc, I reinstalled the Twain device, had to reinstall the wheel mouse... reinstalled other applications... rebooted three times... what is it with microsoft operating systems anyway??? I've got UNIX systems that have been running for years without trouble... I can't keep a pc working for more than a few days at most without having to reboot or reload apps... ah, but I digress... and dream of a day when I have all the drivers for my HP-UX workstation so I can toss this wintel piece of garbage in the garbage... hope the image helps. john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2001 20:28:19 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Fwd: front axle q At 01:36 AM 11/5/01 -0800, JWS wrote: >>Joe, any idea why they changed in 1973? If anyone has a stock antenna mast in good condition that they would be willing to part with (reasonably priced) I am in need. It is for a 83 Cherokee and as near as I can tell the mast was the same for quite a few years around 83.
