The Buick motor looks a lot like the AMC! See if there is a vacuum modulator on the passenger's side of the trans, like the '79 should have (unless you have a std trans) The pre '72 AMC motor has a different crank flange, flexplate and torque converter. (the TH400 trans also has the universal pattern and an adapter ring) From: john On Fri, 16 Nov 2001, Jonathan Evans wrote: I have a question for you: I have a 1979 Wagoneer with a blown 8-cylinder AMC engine in it, and I want to swap out engines. I have a buddy who's got an old Wagoneer with an engine that looks exactly identical, but I can't tell for sure if they'll swap out. How could I be sure before we get into it too deep to turn back? The 360 has been around for a long time. There is only one "gotcha" that you need to worry about, and that only affects newer ('80 and up) engines using the TF727, it's the bushing on the end of the crank. If you swap from one TH400 to another you'll be fine. ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 03:23:20 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: fsj: Fwd: thanks jim and more on mini starters for amc! A: I'm passing this on to the other lists I'm on. I'm working my backside off right now to get my house finished so I can refinance, and take my vacation in my dad's trailer in Salmon Arm! From: "Gerry Petry" hi guys, just letting you all know i have custom built amc starters available for amc 6 and v-8,s. these are readily available in 2 versions., 1.2 kw and 1.4 kw. we can allso do one with as much power as you need! the 1.2 will do for most hi perf and street and strip engines. the 1.4 will do 13-1 race engines, supercharged , etc! the 1.2 has 50 % more crank power than a factory amc starter, and the stock ones from 67 - mid 80,s have 0.8 kw. the 1.2 draws far less current than a factory one and is a high reving gear reduction style! the stock one is low revving direct drive! the stock one is built cheap with bushings etc, and ours are all bearing construction. they do not drag down when hot, like stock ones! they are 1/2 the size and weight and mount in multiple positions. they rotate in 20 deg increments for maximum header and chassis clearance! there is other similiar units available such as the mean green one! ours are smaller and far bettor than them, and or the mallory ones! ours are far cheaper as well, but more than a stock starter. ours have a superior reduction setup, and we only use brand new ,top of the line nippondenso drive motors. no rebuilt or taiwan junk! these are top quality units and may only be available temporarily. we allso build starters for many other rare applications! this starter will not leave ya stranded out in the bush! we can not produce huge amounts, and we are just a small custom shop! they are made one at a time! there is no customs duty or additional taxes in u.s., as these fall under the new u.s. canada trade agreement. average shipping is aprox 12 days, via airmail, and 15.00 to any where in north america and will ship world wide ! they run 219.00 dollars u.s.! (note ship time can vary!) there is pics on my site! thanks gerry, hoping this is not spam! The same list where the "Herculiner on the Hootis" string came from! ) and discovered one of our local diff guys has opened a shop cross country from us in Tenesee! Anyway, I was messing around with the calculators on Randy's Ring and Pinion website (http://www.ring-pinion.com) and found out they have a discount for people from the Explorer4x4 list (I can send you the link if you want to read it yourself) of 10-30% (the more sales, the more discount!) As I was saying (before I broke into the ad for these guys! ) I ran the following numbers through: With my J10 running 4.10 gears (that I want) 33" tires (that I have), .75 gears (the O/Din my AW4 auto) at 60 mph, my stroker motor will be turning 1879 RPM, and 100 mph -at-2528 RPM. If I have to run the 3.31 gears I have now, 60 mph will be 1517 RPM and at 100 MPH -at-2359 RPM. Since over 100 mph in a lifted FSJ won't be necessary too often (it was good enough in Elmo -at-4000RPM!) or all that sane either (who me? ) I'm wondering if I should go lower yet. (If I do, I may as well get D60 rear while I'm at it) I have 300+HP to play with (I know the wind resistance is increased by squares. The faster you go, the resistance jumps exponentially. 30 mph is like 90, and 40 is like 160, etc) ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1500 **************************
