The big question is why? The NP219 is an excellent transfer case and provides a "high lock" that the NP229 doesn't. Otherwise, swapping in an NP229 shouldn't be a problem, just add the underdash switch and a few vacuum lines. I would NOT install hubs or bother with the axle disconnect system they used on the NP229s. The NP228 and NP229 and NP219 should be interchangeable. If your NP219 Quadratrac is working I'd recommend leaving it in place. If it's broken, an NP228 or NP229 would bolt in with only the underdash switch and vacuum lines needed. Again, do NOT install hubs with the NP229 Selectrac, if you engage 4wd with the hubs disengaged you will damage the viscous coupler, very expensive... john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 22:08:06 -0800 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: fsj: new to list Thought I'd introduce myself to the list. I've had FSJ's for a while. I passed on one as my first car (an 85 GW) because I was going to college and needed something that would allow me to drive 450 miles round trip and be able to still have enough money to eat. I vowed to get one after I graduated, and sure enough, I did. I am now the proud owner of two FSJ's, one a 77 four door cherokee, and the other a 74 two door cherokee. The 77 has a factory 401, turbo 400 and quadratrac. It is white with the nifty black indian stripe down the sides. It has the aluminum us mags with jeep caps also. It pulls like an elephant on crack, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. It's even more fun showing my brother in his '93 bronco how REAL 4x4's are supposed to perform :) The 74 has a 258-6 with a 1bbl carter carb (until it becomes smog exempt), and has a stock 3-speed manual tranny. It originally came with manual drum brakes, but the previous owner converted it to power brakes and added disks to the front from a 77 wagoneer. It has power steering, and that's it. No A/C, no power tailgate, nuthin. Truck's got 364k on it (engine's got around 130k on it, the tranny's got about 85k on it, and the rear end has about 5k on it), but still is surprisingly tight. Neither truck is lifted, and both just run p235-75R15's (goodyear workhorses on the 77 and kirkland signature A/T's on the 74 - both selections from the previous owners). Had one question for other q-trac owners. The switch in the glove compartment of the 77 spins freely - i.e. it doesn't really do anything. I haven't needed to use emergency mode (yet), but would like to fix it just in case I do. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance... If you're swapping from something like a dana 20 to a qtrac case, I could see where you're having problems, but if you're swapping qtrac for qtrac, you wouldn't have this problem. K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 16:11:40 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: J10 dreamin' The delay in the restoration of my '83 J10 continues, but this isn't all that bad. It's given me more time to think about the final product and allowed me to scare up more resources. :) Just contacted the wrecking yard in BC, $500 Canadian for an NP242. Have someone interested in the NP219 so it won't cost much to make the transition, and I might be able to sell the $65 hunk of aluminum alloy to someone interested in adapting an FSJ xfr case to an XJ tranny, hey Jim? ;) Current thoughts are focused on the bed. I was going to go with a dump bed setup... not sure I need or want to have the main bed dump as there are complications because of dual fuel tanks, tool boxes and so on. Not to mention the extra weight for the hydraulics... Haven't completely ruled it out, but I'm thinking I'll definitely make the J10 trailer a dump box as it'll be hauling gravel, bark dust, topsoil and scrap metal. Thinking about how to best use the J10 stepside bed. A hard cover without using the roll bar makes sense... thinking Diamond plate across the bed might be the way to go. boeing surplus sells the stuff in sheets, since the bed is just over 48" wide and 7'2" long a 4x8 sheet will almost work. Would have to build a frame to cover the bed, with filler on the ends as the stepside sides are higher than the front and the tailgate. Whatever way it's set across the bed it'll have to come off and then sit along the left side of the bed in a rack or holder of some kind. This will permit the use of the bed for large items and keep the lid with the truck and not block my view to the rear/right. The diamond plate material would probably be strong enough to walk on, yet light enough to move by myself. Might even be able to come up with a hinge to the side to allow it to open from the curb side and then "retract". In the bed itself in the back I'd like a tool box drawer. Again diamond plate across the bed raised up on brackets or rectangular bar would allow enough space for a roll out drawer made from sheetmetal to hold the high lift jack, chains, jacks, handtools, spare oil, etc. It will eat of a bit of the bed height though. In the front of the bed will sit the spare tire, mounted to the floor. A mount on the front brushguard will exist so the spare could be moved to the front if I needed the bed for a large load. The bed of course would be lined with an excellent quality bed liner of some kind to protect it against rust, dents, and make it quiet. The J10 trailer will also be lined, and I'm thinking a Hard cover on it would be trick as well... Will have to get down to Boeing surplus and check out what they have. :) Maybe two panels would make it easier to cover the entire bed... then the problem is sealing the "seam" to keep the bed weathertight... I guess to state the bed goals it would be: - hard cover, weather tight and secure - cover removable to allow full use of bed - cover to remain with bed - cover to be moved by one person - use of roll bar with cover "stowed" to side on stepside - "affordable" - beds lined with quality liner - spare tires accessible (under trailer, front of bed stepside) john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 19:05:11 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Help me please! - THANX At 09:52 PM 11/21/01 -0500, Glenntsu-at-aol.com wrote: >To John, Thank you for forwarding my problem about my TC R&R.
