I don't want to get my RPMs too high...like they are now. I figure the ideal RPM range is about 2500-3000 rpm. WIth 33's and 3.56:1 gears, I figured that I would be turning about 2700RPM at 65mph. Did I figure wrong? Maybe I didn't figure my current ratio correctly. I may need to recheck my stock ratio...I hope I am not looking at a 2.72 ratio gear currently in the AMC 20/Dana 30 axles. I guess the only way to be sure is by opening the diff and counting teeth on the ring and pinion. I looked at the tag on the front axle and it indicated a 3.08 stock ratio. I think having the auto in the CJ will actually give it a little more pulling power...not to mention that it will be a LOT quieter and easier to drive. I am also planning to install the twin-stick shift setup for the Dana 300. I have already done the u-bolt upgrade to the rear axle yoke and I am about to replace the rear yoke (on the D300) with a u-bolt style yoke from a BW 1339 (QuadraTrac) T/C. I still need to find a yoke for the front T/C output. The Dana 30 looks like I may be able to drill it out to accept the u-bolts. BTW...if anyone wants the part numbers and tips/tricks to this driveline mod, let me know and I will post it. It's hard to find a nice J-Truck, it seems, Oh, I suppose they can be had, but is a Willys a reasonable alternative for a ranch truck/5-10 mile commute kind of situation ? Most likely it will have the Hurricane flathead 6(way heavier than a chevy small block) and a 3spd, D18 transfer case, drum brakes all around (single cell master cylinder?) A couple considerations spring to mind - need to harden the valve seats - but a guy on their mailing list says not to take the engine out - rebuild it in the truck! Can I press in hardened valve seats in the block w/o removing the block ? Gear ratios most common is 4.88:1 So top speed around 55 mph. Do I wanna go any faster in one of these ? There's one on Ebay in Nebraska, but needs a engine rebuild, sparked my interest. Of course there's old wiring, and suspensions that sag with age.... etc. Basically I'd like an old pickup, but an alternative to the regular crowd. - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 21:04:08 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Wagoneer clutch parts At 08:35 PM 12/3/01 -0800, alesa burkett wrote: >Hi John, >My name is Clay Burkett. Specifically, I'm looking for a >set of bushings and seals for the bell crank and a release rod. So I'm going to guess that you have the 258 with the manual, right? must be if you're talking clutch... :) Should be the T-176 4 speed. It's really rare to find an '80s vintage wagoneer with a manual tranny. My '83 J10 has (or will have had) the 258 with a T-5. It's interesting to note that the V8 had the option for the 4speed in the J-truck only, and the T-5 wasn't offered in '84, so I guess the '83 was the last year for it... that's ok, they had a poor track record. The AT is the only thing that came with the V8 in the Wagoneer.. >I tried using a search engine with the key words "Jeep clutch >parts", but all the information or parts I could find were for >CJ's and Wranglers. The bell crank, bushings, seals, and release >rod may be the same for both the CJ and the Wagoneer--there are >some differences in the clutch linkages though. When I asked the Release rods MIGHT be interchangeable... or it could be extended/shortened pretty easy. We're talking about the rod that goes from the Bellcrank pivot thing over the throwout lever, right? Why not take the one you have to NAPA and let them find one that will work (then let us know what worked. :) The parts are all pretty standard. Simple and functional, and easy to adapt. There is such a mix of AMC, GM and Ford stuff on these jewels it doesn't take a lot of mechanical or engineering skill to make stuff work. A little bailing wire, duct tape, a big hammer and a hot wrench, and maybe a buzz box, or JB weld and voila, you're back on the road... :) I won't tell you all the parts I used on my '67 Wagoneer... but it was interesting enough to land me in the Shop Scene pages of Four Wheeler. :) The CJ would be extremely close or so close you and I couldn't tell the difference... My shop manual for '84 doesn't include the CJ, BUT my '82 manual does... the clutch linkage for the 6 cyl is different between the SJ and the CJ, but mainly in the Bellcrank and it's bushings. The Release rod looks very similar... Your Jeep dealer should have this stuff on CD. They have the info back to 1981 on CD. The computer system will go back to around '85 or '86, can't remember now... or was the computer also back to '81? Anyway, the parts will have been obsoleted by now and crossed about 15 million times... and then find out they were deleted... :) Most Jeep dealers are new to Jeeps... although you'd think in Montana they'd have real Jeeps and real dealers... ;) so, you could try the following sites... someone sent me this link, never dealt with them. http://specialtyparts.com/ these guys are local to me... a bit expensive but often negotiable... been dealing with them since my first Jeep in '87... (they used to be called Mr. Jeeps... ;) http://www.oly4x4.com/main.htm I'd head down to your local NAPA with parts in hand and have them figure out what you need in the way of generic seals, bushings and threaded gizmos. Remember if they have a good rod that's a little too long... cut it down, too short, weld on an extension or get a threaded coupler and some rod to extended it and use extra jam nuts or touch weld it in place. >John for any suggestions of helpful sights on the internet, he >said you were the man to ask about Wagoneers. So how about it, >any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your input. Clay. ur welcome, hope this helps... You could always send the pieces with John and we can make it work here... I'd be guessing that he'll be around here for the holidays... :) Oh, wait... the guy I'm buying my '75 J10 for a trailer had a 4speed in it. He'd know for certain if the linkages and stuff are interchangeable and he might even have a spare one from "my" J10. You're welcome to it, even though I may end up needing it for my '67 Panel if my friend doesn't need it for his YJ setup... I'll cc him... Chris, if you're not using the clutch linkage stuff from the J10 and it's in good shape let me know... I'm still waiting for the guy that did the driveway to get out here and level out this mess he left me... soon as he does we can drag the J10 over here next to my shop... I thought about cutting it up over there, but then I have the problem of dealing with the axle and cab. I'll just cut the frame and the bolts to the cab and wheel that part over until I'm ready to deal with 'em... :) If the guy doesn't show up soon I'll see if my neighbor can come over with his Takaguchi and smooth it out a bit... if it will ever stop raining... :) john meister snohomish, washington - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2001 11:32:01 -0600 From: Roy Kesmodel Subject: fsj: strange alternator behavior Hi all, In Tank ('82 Chero) is the ammeter part of the charging circuit? I have this intermittent problem where the ammeter suddenly drops to zero and the fuel, oil, and temp gages quit working. Usually this happens at low idle and a 'blip' on the gas gets it working again. If that doesn't work, it usually means I've lost an alternator belt. Well, this morning it did it and the 'blip' didn't work. So I pulled over and checked, belt OK. Just for giggles, I checked the voltage at the battery, 12.4V, indicating no output from alt. A little down the road 'blip' worked. After I got to work I checked Battery voltage - 14.3V, alt working. Allowed idle to drop to where ammeter and gages pooped out, checked voltage again, 12.4V, alt not working. Any ideas?
