The wagoneer is not charging the battery. evidently it will run just fine but after driving for awhile, if i turn it off, it won't start again. if i wait a little and give the battery some time to recharge itslef it turns over and will go down the road until the next time i turn it off. i haven't driven it like this at all, just from the gas station it broke down at back home. At first I was thinking alternator but it seems odd that it runs the vehicle but will not charge the battery...doesn't it? I thought maybe the starter solenoid, which everything apperas to go through but it does start, with a charged battery. What should i be looking for? And, if i end up replacing the alt is should i think about putting a higher amp model on? according to the parts store i have a like a 63 amp model on there now. i did purchase the alternator but would gladly take it back if there is another one that would be more desirable. Thanks for any help or advice you can offer. If its not too much trouble please CC me on the replies, I am going to try to fix this thing tomorrow whole i have the day off. It's brand new John, so he could return it if need be! ) I just realized that I sent Anthony to the other store to get the 2-4 bbl adapter and it may not be the right one! (I was just starting to come down with the bug I have now) Somehow I confused putting the Carter 2 bbl onto the 360 (I did this on my '69 Ford pickup with 360 and it worked great, but not everyone can tweak them like me! ) It requires a 4bbl/4bbl adapter (my oops!) because of the large base pattern of the Motorcraft 2 bbl. You need a 2bbl carb base gasket (Ford or Jeep should work) that covers any edge gap (I don't recall making one, but I may have) and there is a tin plate that goes between the carb and adapter I also forgot about (Didn't see one in my store yet, but B&B has them) Sorry, but it's easier to remember these things while sitting in front of the screen because of all the noise and rush in the store. Basically, you mount the adapter plate (with the base hermetically sealed). Then mount the carb on that, and get the throttle linkage adapter if needed. I believe the carb comes with a barbed fuel fitting, so you need a piece of hose to attach that (make sure the original fuel filter is mounted with the vapor line in the 12:00 position when done to help avoid vapor lock) Then it's a matter of hooking up hoses for vacuum and you're off! I've decided I'm finally going to try to get The Judge's cruise control system to work (it's been non-op since I bought the truck). I've got the shop manuals and such that describe troubleshooting, but what they DON'T TELL YOU is where the feed to the vacuum canister is supposed to originate! Does anyone know where I should be connecting that hose? Right now it's branching off of the heater control storage canister, and I know that can't be right, because a transition from a small-diameter vacuum hose to a large-diameter hose is just wrong. Has anyone tackled this? Anyone with a stock setup that can tell me where it goes? The Judge is an '87 GW, by the way. There are a few issues to deal with. (I'm cc'ing John to see if he remembers anything I forgot) First, if you're going with a V8 you'll need to get an AW4 from a '91 or newer XJ, then take the 6 cyl flexplate and balance it to your motor (360s are externally balanced unless redone by a balancing shop) 2nd, there appears to be a fit up issue with the NP208, so the NP229 may not slide all the way on the shaft either (I'm using the original trans sleeve shaved down to 7/8"-1" as a spacer) 3rd, it's about 3" (I gave John M the exact measurements and they are posted on wagoneers.com someplace) longer than the 727 (not too big of a deal for mounts, but driveshafts will need changing too) 4th linkage to shift (both trans and transfercase) 5th, there is the wiring and kickdown cable issue. The AW4 is completely computer controlled, and requires a throttle position sensor for feedback, and tvs cable, plus grafting into other systems (like the brake switch) From: "Don Weber" Will an AW4 work in a GW? That's a general question I know, and I know about moving the crank sensor, but my main question is will it handle the work I want to do. I will use, when my hitch gets here, my GW for towing (app. 4-7k lbs.) and general mayhem. I want to still use my NP229 since it does what I want it to. Tranny mount issues don't scare me. Well, the amc (car) guys usually just head down to an auto parts store and scour the HELP! section, there's often some pin/bushing kit in there that will work. I've never had this problem with an FSJ, so I wouldn't know where to tackle. I'd bet pin/bushings in a junkyard are gonna be fairly well used, and you'd rather just use new anyway. Hope this helps... K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 13:50:10 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: AW4 in GW The AW4 will "mostly" bolt up to the AMC motor, similar pattern, but I think the starter is an issue... Then there is all the computer stuff... Although I don't think you'd need the crank position sensor, that's for the fuel injection on the engine... but the AW4 is computer controlled. There is a way of manually shifting the computer, we figured it out on the XJ list... but you risk burning up the transmission that way. So, basically I'd say NO to an AW4 in a GW with the carb'd 360. It's highly recommended to keep an original trans/engine combo intact, they're sized and mated up nicely. I like the 4.0L driveline, and am using it in my '83 J10 Stepside. Although the 4.0L engine doesn't have the "depth of power" of a 360, meaning that when you really get down to pulling a heavy load it just doesn't have the same power. HOWEVER, the 4.0L in the same rig will get you faster acceleration and better economy. The 4.0L has similar towing capacities in the XJ to an older SJ. With the right engine/trans coolers and gearing I don't see why a 4.0L couldn't do the same job. You may not be able to tow a horse trailer over the pass at the speed limit with a 4.0L, but it would make it, and probably within a few miles of the limit, but with no reserve power and a climbing temp gauge. The issue is the weight of the GW over an XJ. An empty GW will tip the scales at close to 5,000lbs. An empty XJ tips the same scale around 4,000lbs. That means you're pushing 1/2 ton extra around... before you hook up the trailer. My utility trailer weighs about 1,400lbs. With it empty and connected to my 4.0L xj I found the performance acceptable. It was still faster than Old Blue with an edelbrock performer setup and a free flowing exhaust.... gearing on the '81 Wagoneer Ltd had a lot to do with it... 2.72s... If you're doing heavy towing with your GW, stick with the driveline it has or look at getting a newer MOPAR v8/trans combo, preferably the 4.7L V8 from a WJ GC. They're impressive. I'd steer clear of the 318 type motors used in the older GCs (ZJ), Dakotas and Durangos... As far as mating the AW4 to the older style NP xfr cases... you'll need to have a 23 spline AW4, '91 and up... and the shaft/case won't mate, although I have a hunk of alloy aluminum of suitable size to make an adapter I'll gladly sell to you for what it cost me, $65 plus shipping... diagram on how to use it on my server as well... :) john At 11:26 AM 12/31/01 -0800, James Blair wrote: >A: It won't just bolt in.
