I did this upgrade on the AMC 360 that I am currently using and it worked REALLY well. Here's the skinny on how to do it... First...go to your local parts store and get the distributor cap, base (may be called "adapter"), and rotor. The installation of the cap/base and rotor assemblies is pretty much self-explanatory. It will only fit on your distributor one way. Next is the coil. You can get more than one type of the Ford TFI coil. I got one made by Borg-Warner. It cost me $44.95+tax at AutoZone in Aransas Pass, Tx. I wouldn't go with the bargain-basement $19.95+lifetime warranty made by Standard. I have heard that it is crap. Anyway, for the coil installation, simply cut (yes, you read correctly, CUT) the horseshoe connector from your existing wiring harness. Now, while you were at the parts store, you had the presence of mind to purchase the Ford TFI coil connector for about $9.95. It has a red wire and a green wire. The green wire is the negative wire for the coil primary voltage (from the module). I used crimp connectors and shrink tubing to splice this into my wiring harness. MAKE DAMN SURE YOU GET THE POLARITY CORRECT WHEN YOU SPLICE THIS INTO YOUR HARNESS OR YOU WILL WIND UP SMOKING YOUR MODULE AND NEW COIL. The polarity is, in fact, molded into the rectangular connector on the top of the coil. I don't remember off hand which one is which. One more neat thing about this coil connector. It has two wires for the ground connection. This means quick and painless hookup of a dwell tach or even a dash-mounted tach. I crimped a male blade connector onto one of the negative wires and covered it with a vacuum port cap so it wouldn't accidentally ground to the block or valve cover. Now your coil upgrade is ALMOST complete. You still have to make new spark plug wires. I bought the Accel HEI 8.8mm cut-to-fit wire kit. It cost me about $50.00 at HiLo/O'Reilly's Auto Parts in Rockport, Tx. This was a real pain in the kiester, but it is necessary if you want the most out of your new HEI system. Crimping the new plug connectors is the worst part if you don't have the crimper that sets in a bench vise...I had to use a set of flimsy little wire strippers that had a "plug wire crimper" on them...and they didn't work too well. The last part of your upgrade is to run your engine and set your ignition timing with the new coil. I played with my plug gap too and found that a 0.040" gap works best with my engine. Ford trucks with this coil give 0.042"-0.044" for the plug gap specification. You will just have to tweak the plug gap to your engine. Good luck with the ignition upgrade. I love it. Keep on Jeepin'!!! If it's kept at too high a speed for downshifting normally, it's like manually shifting down a gear when it should be shifting up (it used to be a "cool" noise when I was young enough not to realize the damage being caused by decompression chirping my tires this way) It could be the pressure regulator valave is stuck and over pressurizing the front pump (my Dodge van did that, and drove the converter and crank so far forward the pump disengaged and the converter self destructed ) I'd get a line pressure test done to be sure. It's easy to fix when things are still in less than 1000 bits! It sounded odd to me too, but I'm told it is normal for a HO Alt to not put much poop out at low RPMS, the battery does all the work at low RPMs. So perhaps you would notice an improvement with a new battery, given you have the HO Alt. Getting the timing and idle at spec may improve things too. Why is your idle low? If it is too low you lean even harder on that old battery. My '88 has done similar tricks. For a while there, when it was hot and muggy warm, raining in the summer, early in the morning.... When I first leave the house in the morning, and it is 80-90 degrees already and muggy, rainy, and I'm off early to work, of course then I have lights, wipers, defroster at full blast so I can see, radio on, etc. When I first leave the house, I'm driving short distances from stop sign to stop sign for several legs of the trip. At each of these stop signs, the truck nearly died as the ALT gauge dropped WAY down into the red maybe 5-6Volts while stopped. Lights dim, radio cut in/out. Things were fine after I got on the other side of Pleasantville and hit the long stretches on the way to Memphis. Running at 50mph for a little while here and there always pumped up the batt so she would always start fine later at work. I didn't have that problem in the winter. I say because the choke is set when I'm doing the short chutes and RPMs are up until AFTER I get to the long drive sections and the engine is good and warm. I eventually found my idle down around 500 when it should have been running 650 and up. Since I was being more proactive with the timing and RPM adjustments (while searching for Gremlins of PING) I noticed THIS summer that I didn't have nearly as much trouble with it doing this. Maybe we didn't have as many hot and rainy mornings... I dunno, time will tell. Lots of things cause slight misses. I think you said it has "always" done that so hmm.... have you put any GOOD plug wires on since you got it? Not sure if that was included in the "ognition stuff" or not.... There's my $.02...
