It's grey, with the burgundy interior, inside and out in pretty good shape, clean, with no tears in the leather or rust. Power seats, door locks and windows all work. The oil pressure is strong, and the AC is cold. The car passed New York State Inspection two weeks ago. The car has just under 130K miles and needs a tune-up. The following has been replaced within the last year: rear breaks, battery, starter motor, water pump, u-joints, right-side wheel bearings, rear window motor, shocks, AM/FM/CD, and radiator. I need to get $4,000- for the Wag. It can be seen in Riverdale (which is part of the Bronx), New York. Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested. Any questions or interest, please e-mail me off-list RFISCHEL-at-osc.state.ny.us, or call me at 212.681.4466. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 15:21:23 -0700 From: "Daniel Beiers" Subject: fsj: Re: Missing and Surging ETC. thanks for the input michael, very helpful as usual dan >From: Michael Shimniok >Subject: Re: [fsj: Missing and Surging] > >If the alternator is a high amp capacity it may not generate much amperage >at >low (idle) rpms. > >The surging/missing may well be a vacuum leak. Catch it soon enough, and there won't be metal shreds through the whole trans. (Did you recently put a motor in? If the converter wasn't fully engaged, the front pump will bust and cause similar loss of speed till it self destructs. The trans I sent to Texas did that for almost a week, then blew apart. If the TH400 crank bushing hadn't been still in the back of the crank, the trans would likely be running still perfectly) I wonder if the front band isn't disengaging? That would keep it in 2nd gear, but would also smoke the clutches in a hurry. From: Ken Gaines Well...here's the latest scoop on the "new" tranny... This weekend, I pulled the diff cover to make sure that I had the gear I thought I had....I didn't have the 3.08. The gear in my AMC 20 is (ugh) a 2.73 (41-15 tooth count) gear.(That gear HAS to go bye bye in favor of a 3.54 gear set.) This does not bode well as it means my tranny woes are worsening. I am planning to get a REAL dashboard mounted tach this weekend to see what my engine is really doing. It is turning 2000 rpm in 3rd gear -at- 45mph as measured by my Craftsman dwell tach run through the firewall. This means that my trans ratio (3rd gear) would have to be 1.50. (According to the really neat calculator i found at www.prestage.com) If I am correct, a TF727 has a 3rd gear ratio of 1.00. I know an automatic tranny slips some (usually about 200-300 rpm), but to have a 50% change in effective gear ratio there has to be something wrong with the tranny internally IMHO. Could it be that I just need a flush and filter/fluid change with accompanying rear band adjustment? (BTW...what is the torque spec for the rear band adjustment on the TF727?) I really can't see that something as simple as the filter and/or band adjustment could make this tranny slip THAT much. Should I just skip all the intermediate testing and go straight to my local parts house and purchase a rebuild kit and torque converter for this tranny? The kit is only about $90 for clutches, steels, and bands. I don't think this kit has the valve body "programmer" plate or the filter and gasket (only another $8.00 for the filter/gasket.) How much should I plan to shell out for the lock-up converter? Does $200 sound about right? Now for the REALLY dumb question of the day...remember how I said my kickdown linkage was binding on the brake proportioning valve? Well, we did a backyard- welder temporary fix on it. I broke the press welds with a torch and moved the lower linkage rod in about 0.5" to get it off the linkage. It worked pretty well. I am not sure if I have this thing adjusted properly. It seems to downshift the tranny up to about 35 mph. Is this the right downshift point? The other shift points were NOT affected when I did this. They stayed at 20mph and 35mph respectively. The downshift DID however, become a little more pronounced when I am braking. Just for information, here are the internal ratios for the TF727: 1st: 2.45:1 2nd: 1.45:1 3rd: 1.00:1 Looking at this set of numbers, it would seem that my tranny is not shifting out of 2nd like it should.(2.73 gear, 45mph, 2000rpm, => 1.50 => almost 1.45 2nd gear) I DO in fact feel an upshift at about 35 mph but my engine rpms don't track with what they should be. Is it possible that the tranny is somehow upshifting then downshifting back into 2nd? Wouldn't this indicate that the kickdown is still not properly adjusted? The trouble with this theory is that I am not feeling a downshift with increased throttle opening. Would I even notice the downshift at this speed? So...with that, I am off to work and class. Hope everyone had a great 3-day weekend. Keep on Jeepin'!!!! I think it was FF78B (IIRC, it was the same # as the cap, but a letter added after) From: Michael Shimniok On the Ford TFI system, they adapt the old style distributor to the new larger, wider cap. They do this with an adaptor that sits where the old cap used to. That must be the 'distributor cap base' they talk about. It simply raises up the cap and adapts the much wider dia cap to the small dia distributor. Michael "Daniel Beiers" wrote: this article http://www.ifsja.org/tech/electrical/ignitionupgrade.shtml calls for a replacement "distributor cap base" what is that? the "dish" that the distributor connects to, with the spring clips that hold the cap in place? isn't that part of the distributor itself? or is it removable? have any of you guys tried this? thanks dan ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 21:19:48 GMT From: Ken Gaines Subject: fsj: TF727 converter If I do in fact have to change the converter, what kind of price should I expect to pay? Does $150-$200 sound about right? I have been looking around the Web for them and it seems that there are two kinds of converters available for this tranny. Trouble is, I am not really sure if this tranny had a lock-up converter or not. It came from a 1985 GW/360. Does anyone know if these trucks came with a lock-up converter? I don't think they are interchangeable...it seems that the pump is different between the two converter types.
