From: Landon Tesar Hi, I apologize if this is a double post. I sent from another email address and never saw it show up on the digest. I need to replace the driver's spindle on my 89 GW. I think. It has a .025 groove eaten into the inner bearing surface. This is the one that has been clicking along at even a slight left hand turn for, oh, maybe 8 months/8000 miles. Anyway, pure lack of maintenance here and I suggest to all that they repack these and listen for the first signs of the noise. Does anyone know of/have for not too much a good spindle ? Can I trust one from a junkyard? I've been quoted $45-50. I'm amazed that there are few, if any, sources for aftermarket spindles. Do people weld them up and turn them down ? I haven't yet sent him results from the laptop for tuning a new chip, however -- the main reason recently is I wanted to get a couple exhaust leaks fixed, which I did last weekend. So now it's just having a bit of time to go out and record some data runs. Performance is pretty good... Still wants a little bit to die on me or have an occasional carb-style backfire when it's warming up, but I also think that's all due to running rich. And especially once it's warmed up, it's at least as good as the old carb, and better in just about anything but accelerating from a dead stop. Haven't tried it at higher elevations yet, which is my main goal (just a bit ahead of better mileage), but that's another thing I want to wait on until it's not running as rich. (I would strongly advise not using anything Holley based on personal experience.) Depending on his current model, might include either a speed sensor or a knock sensor. Mine has just the knock sensor (and was originally installed before I got even that). And of course MAP sensor. Plus I think he's including a cable to connect to the serial port of a PC with all of them now, though I'm not positive... I have one and have been using the freeware program he recommends to get data. (As I mentioned above, I haven't sent him any results yet, because the trial runs I did weren't quite complete and were before I got the exhaust leaks fixed.) I will say communication with the guy who does these has been very good. Email responses are fast, and it definitely seems like he knows what he's doing. He also can put together ported injection systems (more expensive, like $2000, which does include the intake manifold, custom drilled for the injection ports and everything), which I am probably going to eventually try for my '74/401 (as soon as fundage allows). In fact, I'm getting that Offenhauser dual-quad intake manifold from eBay that somebody here posted the link for (that's how I found it), and when I get around to it (monetarily), I'm going to send it to him to use for the ported system. He's going to do the drilling and add the fuel rails (of course) and adapt it with two throttle bodies. Oughta be pretty impressive when it's all done. Only problem is that it will be at least several months before I can afford it, and quite likely a year or more (due to many other large projects, both home and cars). - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dogs believe they are human.
